Huo Chunyang: The road to simplicity is true and unbroken
The first episode of "The Masters of the Masters" (Season 4) focuses on the artistic exploration of Huo Chunyang, a famous flower and bird painter and professor at Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts. He deeply comprehended the essence of traditional Chinese culture, deeply rooted the broad and profound Chinese philosophical ideas in his works of art, and became one of the most representative painters of traditional freehand flower and bird painting in mainland China with his unique painting style of "using light to convey thickness, and sparse to conceal luxury".
In 1946, Huo Chunyang was born in an ordinary peasant family in Qingyuan, Hebei. In the 70s of the 20th century, Huo Chunyang apprenticed to Sun Qifeng and devoted himself to the study of flower and bird painting. In 1977, the Chinese painting "Mountains and Flowers" completed by the two of them was well received upon exhibition. This vibrant work catapulted Huo Chunyang to fame in the Chinese art world.
In the 80s of the 20th century, Huo Chunyang poured his research and perception of traditional ideas such as Confucianism and Taoism into his paintings. In the 90s of the 20th century, his creative style began to change, and he created a number of masterpieces such as "The Soul of a Gentleman", "Only to See the Clear Square and See the Bamboo Products", "Rhyme and Spring". Based on traditional culture and purifying the soul as the main purpose of his creation, he has formed a unique style of painting in his calligraphy and painting works, which are subtle and simple.
