Chai Yunzhen was a first-class combat hero on the Korean battlefield, but when the medal was awarded, he was nowhere to be found. It wasn't until 33 years later that the troops found him in Sichuan. At the end of May 1951, on the Korean battlefield, the fifth battle was nearing its end. Because the battle line was too long and the material supply could not keep up, the volunteer army had to stop the offensive and retreat north on the whole line. Li Qiwei, who had figured out the law of the "worship offensive" of the Volunteer Army, ordered the US army to launch an all-out attack and chased all the way to the 38th parallel.
On May 26, in order to stop the pursuit of American troops and ensure the safety of the retreating troops. The 45th Division of the 15th Army, where Chai Yunzhen belonged, received the task of blocking the enemy army in Pu Dafeng for 7-10 days.
At this time, one end of Pu Dafeng Mountain was the position of the US army, and the other end was the position of the volunteers. And there is a very critical opening in the position of the volunteers. If Park Dafeng is lost, the back road of the volunteer army will be cut off. Therefore, all the mountains on Puda Peak are fighting for every inch of land.
From dawn on May 28, the US troops, under the cover of aircraft, artillery, and tanks, began to attack the positions of our troops at Park Dafeng. After 5 days and 5 nights of fierce fighting, the 134th Regiment of the 45th Division of the Volunteer Army, which held on to Pu Dafeng, suffered heavy casualties, and on the 6th day, the two main peak positions of our army were lost, and the enemy's heavy machine guns could directly hit the command post of the volunteer barracks, and the head of the person could not be raised.
The battalion commander ordered Chai Yunzhen to lead his seventh squad to assault and recapture the position.
Chai Yunzhen led 5 fighters and took advantage of the night to sneak up from the left and right sides. The volunteers at night were invincible, and even the Americans said that "the moon is Chinese." The enemy army was already afraid of night battles, close combat, and surprise. Both positions were quickly recaptured by the Volunteers. Then the position was handed over to the 7th Company, and Chai Yunzhen retreated.
After a few days of fighting, the 7th Company was seriously reduced, and as a result, the 7th Company held for more than 1 hour and lost its position again.
In order to ensure the safety of the battalion command post, Chai Yunzhen led the seventh squad to rush up again. This battle was extremely tragic, and in the end, there were only 2 people left in the class, including Chai Yunzhen. But fortunately, the position was recaptured.
However, when the enemy launched a third attack, the position was lost not long after.
The battalion commander who fought in this battle didn't have any good solutions, so he still called the 8th squad and asked them to take the mountain back.
Chai Yunzhen didn't say a word, and went up again with the only remaining soldier. With his familiarity with the position, Chai Yunzhen touched the enemy's heavy machine gun position, and after solving the enemy's army, he grabbed the heavy machine gun and turned his head, and opened fire on the enemy. The 1,000 spare rounds of ammunition in the machine gun emplacements were directly wiped out by him.
At this time, Chai Yunzhen had already completed the task assigned by the battalion commander, but there was a shortage of manpower and ammunition, and the position he had just recaptured was likely to be recaptured. So Chai Yunzhen, who was supposed to be waiting for help, made a bold decision after observing the situation on the battlefield and went to take the enemy's command post alone. People have lived all their lives and lived hard for decades, why are they killed with one shot?
Chai Yunzhen left his only comrade-in-arms and asked him to stick to the position he had just taken. And he himself took advantage of the terrain to quietly bypass the enemy's patrol sentries and touch the enemy's command headquarters, and the command post was noisy.
He didn't care how many people were inside, he just threw a grenade into it, and with a bang, the command post was quiet. Then he turned to the other side of the command post with his machine gun, and he saw four enemies at a position of 10 meters away. He grabbed the trigger in front of the enemy, and in an instant 3 enemies fell, but at this time the machine gun was silent.
Seeing that the remaining enemy was touching his automatic rifle, Chai Yunzhen couldn't think so much, he rushed down the mountain directly, rushed in front of the enemy before the enemy could shoot, forked the enemy's gun, and then pulled the enemy into the traffic ditch.
It had just rained on the position, and the traffic ditch was full of mud. Chai Yunzhen began to fight hand-to-hand with the enemy in this way, and when he caught mud in his hand, he would blur the enemy's eyes, and when he touched the stone, the enemy would smash his brain. After a few minutes, Chai Yunzhen gradually lost the wind, he wanted to buckle the enemy's eyes, but there were no nail shells on his hands, the first time he only grabbed a few marks, and the second time he was bitten by the enemy. This bite directly broke his right index finger.
In the end, Chai Yunzhen, who was in one hand, ran out of strength, and was seized by the enemy to hit his head with a stone, and in a trance he heard the sound of a machine gun, which was our follow-up reinforcements, and then Chai Yunzhen lost consciousness and fainted. Seeing that Chai Yunzhen was unresponsive, the enemy didn't dare to stay, got up and ran.
In the Pu Dafeng blockade battle, Chai Yunzhenban conquered 3 mountains, annihilated more than 200 enemies, and destroyed 1 enemy command post, creating a miracle of winning more with less. In 1952, the General Political Department of the Volunteer Army awarded Chai Yunzhen the title of first-class combat hero, but at this time, Chai Yunzhen mysteriously disappeared, and the heroic medal issued to him by the Volunteer Army Headquarters was unclaimed.
It wasn't until 33 years later, when the troops found him, that they knew what had happened in those 33 years? Why he disappeared.
It turned out that Chai Yunzhen was seriously injured at that time, and he was sent back to China by the army for treatment, and after several rounds, he was sent to a hospital in Baotou City. Because he was the only one in the 15th Army who was transferred to Baotou City, Chai Yunzhen lost contact with the troops. Because he lost a finger, he felt that he was crippled and could no longer serve his country. In order not to cause trouble to the troops, after he recovered from his injuries and was discharged from the hospital, he went directly back to his hometown in Sichuan.
Although he still can't forget the battlefield filled with gunpowder, in the three years he has been on the battlefield, he has been fighting at night when he sleeps and dreams. But when the battle was over and the peace was over, he seldom mentioned anything about the battlefield. Later, he got married and had children, and time passed day by day, and he quietly and completely integrated into the ocean of people.
It wasn't until September 12, 1984 that Chai Yunzhen saw the revelation of looking for heroes published in "Sichuan Daily", and then he knew that he was also a hero!
