author:Rising star

As the Premier League season draws to a close, it's time to take a look back at the history of Premier League teams on the final day of the season. Ahead of the final game on 19 May, the battle for the Premier League title and European places continues. Here's a full analysis of how teams have performed on the last day of previous Premier League tournaments. Last season, a total of 33 goals were scored in the Premier League's finale, including a 4-4 draw between Southampton and Liverpool. Fans will be hoping to see the same dramatic ending at the end of the season.

20. Luton

Given that this is Luton's first season in the Premier League, there are no performance figures on the final day of the season. They have picked up four points on the final day of the season in the last two Championship seasons. That includes the 2021/22 season, when they beat Reading to secure their final play-off spot. At the moment, it seems that Luton's stay in the Premier League will be short, as they are three points behind Nottingham Forest and their goal difference is huge. Barring an incredible goal on the final day, Luton will be back in the Championship.

19. Wolves

Wolves had a dismal record in the finale. In nine Premier League seasons, they have won just one finale and lost nine. Since returning to the Premier League, they have faced Arsenal (twice), Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool in their final fixtures, losing all five. Gary O'Neal's Wolves travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool this season, which is also Jurgen Klopp's final game for Liverpool. However, this closing game is not important for Wolves, who currently sit 13th in the table, well from the relegation zone.

18. Brentford

Since being promoted to the Premier League in 2021, Brentford's form has been impressive. 13th in 2022 and 9th in 2023 and comfortable relegation this season have cemented Brentford's position in the Premier League. In their first season in the Premier League, Thomas Frank's Brentford lost to Leeds United in the finale. A year later, Brentford won the Treble over Manchester City thanks to the only goal from centre-back Ethan Pinnock. In the 2023/24 season, Brentford will take on Newcastle United.

17. Burnley

Burnley have played nine seasons in the Premier League since they were promoted to the Premier League for the first time in their history in 2009. Under Sean Dyche's leadership, they went on to compete in the Premier League for five consecutive seasons, including a seventh-place finish in 2017/18. In terms of their performance in the closing game, they have not managed a single draw in eight closing matches. Burnley have lost 75 per cent of those fixtures and will be hoping to improve that record this weekend against 17th-placed Nottingham Forest. Since winning over Tottenham in 2010 and Villa in 2015, they have lost six in a row in their closing fixtures. The most recent was in 2022, when they were relegated to the Championship with a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United.

16. Sheffield United

It has been a disappointing season for Sheffield United, who have won just three games all season and are just 16 points with one game remaining. This is Sheffield United's sixth appearance in the Premier League and they have had a mixed record in the closing fixture. In 1992/93, they beat Chelsea 4-2 in the closing game. However, most recently, in the finale of the 2020/21 season, Sheffield United beat Burnley 1-0. On 19 May, Sheffield United will host Tottenham.

15. Brighton

Brighton were promoted to the Premier League for the first time in 2017 and have remained in the Premier League ever since. They have progressively risen through the table, finishing 15th in the first four seasons and in the top half of the bracket in the last two years. Brighton's closing record was inconsistent. They have a record of two wins and two defeats in the Premier League's finale over the past four seasons. This Sunday, they will take on an in-form Manchester United.

14. Bournemouth

If you're looking for goals on the final day of the season, then you should watch Bournemouth take on Chelsea away. They scored a total of 10 goals in the final six Premier League seasons at Bournemouth, including a 5-3 win over Crystal Palace in 2018/19.

13. Nottingham Forest

Last season, Nottingham Forest arrived at Selhurst Park on the final day and ended up drawing 1-1 with Crystal Palace. This season, they need to draw away at Burnley to mathematically secure their place in the top flight. Overall, Nottingham Forest have picked up eight points from six Premier League finalists, including victories over Queens Park Rangers in 1996 and Leicester City in 1999.

12. Crystal Palace

Palace are currently in hot form, winning five of their last six matches, including victories against Manchester United and Liverpool. Their record in the closing game was inconsistent. In their 14 seasons in the Premier League, they have won five, drawn four and lost five. Since returning to the top flight in 2013, Crystal Palace have not returned to the Championship. In that time, they played six games in their final game at Selhurst Park, winning four and drawing two. When they host Aston Villa on Sunday, they will be confident of extending their unbeaten run.

11. Fulham

Fulham will finish the season at the Kniewerwarts Stadium and have a chance to leapfrog Wolves and Crystal Palace to move to 12th place in the league. Fulham had a rather poor record in the finale, losing all three of their matches. These include two defeats to Newcastle United and an away defeat to Manchester United, scoring one goal and conceding eight.

10. Aston Villa

Qualification for next season's Champions League is already in Aston Villa's hands, regardless of whether Tottenham win the final game. Villa have become accustomed to dramatic finales in recent history, particularly after a 1-1 draw with West Ham United in 2020, when they finished 17th with a point ahead of Bournemouth. In the finale of 2022, when Steven Gerrard led Aston Villa to a 2-0 lead at the Etihad Stadium, it looked set to give the trophy to his former club Liverpool. However, in the end, Manchester City came back from behind to win 3-2 and win the Premier League title again.

9. Everton

Everton have never been relegated from the Premier League, although they have had a couple of occasions in recent years. Last season, they relied on Abdoulaye Doucoure's last-day goal to avoid playing in the Championship. Despite being deducted eight points twice this season, Everton are still far from the relegation zone. They are likely to play an important role in the final day of the Premier League as they take on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in the final game of the season. Everton's overall record in the Premier League finale is 31 games, with 10 wins, 6 draws and 15 defeats.

8. West Ham United

All eyes will be on the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, as West Ham United travel to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. This game will be Moyes' last appearance with the Hammers, which adds to the excitement of the game. The two teams met in the finale of the 2013/14 season, when the situation was very similar. Manchester City need a win to secure the title, while West Ham United are already far from the relegation zone. The Hammers have failed to do Liverpool much good this year, but Arsenal fans will be hoping they can get the win and lift them the Premier League title for the first time in 20 years.

7. Manchester City

Manchester City is perhaps synonymous with one of the most memorable closing moments in Premier League history. Sergio Aguero scored in the 94th minute to snatch the trophy from rivals Manchester United. To commemorate Sergio Aguero's goal, Manchester City erected a statue outside the Etihad Stadium and named the reception room "93:20" to commemorate the exact time of Sergio Aguero's goal. Manchester City are no strangers to the drama of the finale, having come back from 2-0 down to snatch the title from Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool in 2022.

6. Newcastle United

Newcastle United have been affected by serious injuries this season. As a result, they will miss out on the Champions League next season. However, they are still battling Chelsea and Manchester United for their last European spot. They will end the season with an away game against Brentford. Fans will remember the finale of the 2015/16 season, when the relegated Magpies beat Tottenham 5-1 to relegate Mauricio Pochettino's side to third. This year's trip to Brentford will be Newcastle United's fourth consecutive season finale away game. They had previously won away at Fulham and Burnley, as well as drawing away at Chelsea.

5. Tottenham

Tottenham end the season away at Sheffield United, who have already conceded more than 100 goals this season. Tottenham, on the other hand, will need a lot of goals to catch up with a goal difference advantaged Villa in the race for the final Champions League spot. Back in 2017, Harry Kane scored a hat-trick in a 7-1 win at relegation side Hull City in the season finale. Similar results may be needed this year. In fact, Tottenham have scored 13 goals in the closing game over the past three seasons, winning every game against Leeds United, Norwich City and Leicester City.

4. Liverpool

Sunday's Anfield stadium will be an exciting farewell game as Jurgen Klopp bids farewell to Liverpool fans after nine years. Liverpool supporters had hoped that the team would continue to push for the title, but recent results against Everton and Crystal Palace have derailed their title race. Under Jurgen Klopp, the Reds lost twice to Manchester City in the final game. The first was in the 2018/19 season, when they finished runners-up with 97 points; The other was in the 2022/23 season, when Manchester City came back from 2-0 down in the final game to deprive Liverpool of the title. Liverpool host Wolves on Sunday, with three of the last six seasons having played their final games at Anfield.

3. Chelsea

Chelsea have enjoyed a series of positive results in recent weeks and are in full swing for a European spot. They will host Bournemouth in the finale. The team's fondest memories of the season's finale came in 2009/10, when Chelsea beat Wigan Athletic 8-0 to lead Manchester United to the title. This year, in-form Cole Palmer will compete with Erling Haaland for the Golden Boot as he is just four goals away from the Manchester City striker.

2. Manchester United

Manchester United have won the most Premier League titles with 13. They last won the title in 2012/13, the year Ferguson left the club. Manchester United had both positive and negative memories of the final game. Sergio Aguero's goal in 2012 and Blackburn's triumph in 1995 are still fresh in my mind. Manchester United, on the other hand, narrowly beat Arsenal by one point in the 1998/99 treble season and beat Chelsea to win the league title in 2008.

1. Arsenal

At the top of the table is Arsenal, who have an impressive record in the Premier League finale. Since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, Arsenal have won 22 games in their final game, losing just six. If they are to have a chance to lift the league trophy for the first time since 2004, they will have to continue that form on Sunday. Since 2016, the Gunners have won all seven games in the finale. That includes 3-1 and 5-1 victories over Everton, who will travel to the Emirates Stadium this weekend.
