Hazzard's windfall: Real Madrid will pay Chelsea a salary despite retiring in 2023

Chelsea will receive a windfall from Real Madrid thanks to the terms of the sale of Eden Hazzard to the European giants in 2019.

Although the Belgian winger left Madrid last summer and has actually retired completely. When Chelsea allowed Hazzard to leave Stamford Bridge, Madrid agreed to a package worth up to £130 million. £88 million of this figure is guaranteed, and £42 million is also paid when various extras are triggered, not all of which are directly related to the player himself.

The Telegraph reports that Madrid's run to the Champions League final has triggered a £5 million surcharge that must be paid to Chelsea, despite Hazzard no longer being at the Bernabeu.

Hazzard signed a five-year contract with Madrid in 2019, so the add-on appears to remain in force as the contract doesn't expire until the end of the season. In fact, the Belgian left the club last summer by mutual consent and opted to hang up his boots a few months later.

However, Madrid's continued success without him is still costing them. There is no doubt that Chelsea had their best transfer results in 2019. In 2012, the Blues paid £32 million for the 21-year-old and scored 110 goals in 352 appearances, during which time the club won six trophies, including their last two Premier League titles.

They were then able to make huge profits from a 28-year-old player who quickly became one of the biggest transfer failures in modern football history due to ongoing injuries. As a result of their huge investment, Madrid have scored just seven goals in 76 games over four seasons. By comparison, in his final year at Chelsea alone, Hazard scored 21 goals in 52 appearances.

The 33-year-old will return to Stamford Bridge this summer as part of the XI World Football Aid Team, alongside Roberto Carlos, Diamond and Tommy Fury after the Gladiators' restart.
