Sony officially announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2023 (January 1 to March 31, 2024), with a turnover of 1,097.3 billion yen in the game and network services division, a year-on-year increase of 2.2%; Operating profit was 106 billion yen, up 172.4% year-on-year, and cumulative PS5 shipments reached 59.3 million units. However, the Sony Group as a whole did not meet its fiscal year expectations.
For the Gaming & Web Services segment, Sony's PS5 consoles shipped 4.5 million units in the quarter and 20.8 million units for the full fiscal year 2023, down 200,000 units from the expected 21 million units. The cumulative shipments of the PS5 were 59.3 million units, which is not much worse than the PS4's 60.2 million units in the same period.
In terms of software, PlayStation (PS5 + PS4) sold 72.6 million copies of its software in the quarter, an increase of 4.6 million copies compared to the same period last fiscal year, of which the digital version accounted for 77%, a year-on-year increase of 7%. Sony's first-party games sold 12.3 million copies, up 2.8 million copies from the same period last fiscal year. Among them, "Jedi Submarine 2", which was launched on February 8, became Sony's fastest-selling game ever, and has sold 12 million copies so far (as of May 5). Presumably, Sony's game sales in the first quarter of fiscal 2024 will get off to a good start.
In terms of network services, PSN had 118 million monthly active users, an increase of 10 million compared to the same period last fiscal year.
