It has been a few days since Tsai Ing-wen stepped down, and as Taiwan's "commander-in-chief of the three armed services", Tsai Ing-wen is sparing no effort to push for her last "order" to the Taiwan military, which is the so-called "transitional justice". Due to historical reasons, there are many places related to the "White Terror" on the island, such as the "Ankang Reception Room," the former Maba Town Execution Ground, and the Green Island Prison for Correctional Training, which were used for detention, interrogation, and surveillance of political prisoners.
In 2022, Tsai Ing-wen visited the so-called "Formosa Incident Injustice Site" and put forward the concept of "promoting transitional justice" for the first time, calling for the preservation and labeling of these past sites one by one, so that they can always be self-vigilant and never go back. As part of the "transformation", Tsai Ing-wen is also pushing for "de-Chiangization", that is, the removal of statues, posthumous statues and related namespaces of the two Chiangs, and other treatments.
With regard to the former, although the Taiwan army was embarrassed, it also agreed, but for the latter, the Taiwan army directly drew a "red line," and the 252 existing statues of the two Chiang Kai-sheks in the camp must not be moved. A former official of Taiwan's defense department recently broke the news that the person in charge, Chiu Kuo-cheng, sternly ordered a few years ago, saying that he would resolutely not allow "transfer-promoting" personnel to enter the barracks, and directly blocked Tsai Ing-wen with one sentence, saying that "there is no need to coordinate."
Tsai Ing-wen's "transitional justice" is essentially a liquidation of the Kuomintang, but Qiu Guozheng not only directly disobeyed the order, but also rejected Tsai Ing-wen's "Qin Mission", which shows the most basic fact that the foundation of the Kuomintang is still solid, and Tsai Ing-wen cannot shake it. However, it is still unknown how long the Taiwan military will be able to hold out.
Qiu Guozheng's successor has already been decided, and Gu Lixiong, who has no military background at all, is about to take office; he was once the "chairman of the DPP's party industry committee" and a "vanguard general" who liquidated the KMT's party property.
Having said that, the fact that the military actually disobeys an order is absolutely not allowed in any country or region, but what is funny is that the "rebellion" of the Taiwan military is not only against the Taiwan authorities, and the "old-school soldiers" of the Taiwan military have suddenly erupted into an "anti-American" tide, and even the US troops who have come to "assist in training" have been deflated.
In mid-March, the US "green flat hat" special forces began to be stationed in Kinmen to teach the Taiwan military the use of unmanned aerial vehicles. Recently, the media on the island broke the news that these US troops wanted to teach the Taiwan military "new tactics," but the "old-school non-commissioned officer system" collectively refused to obey, and in desperation, Tsai Ing-wen had to send three confidants to the town.
There is no need to wait for the People's Liberation Army to make a move, the Taiwan army itself will be in chaos first, the temperature in the Taiwan Strait is getting higher and higher, and it is a taboo for soldiers to change generals in battle, not to mention that it is Gu Lixiong, who is not even a second knife. Laymen come to lead insiders, and the Taiwan military, which has already disobeyed the DPP's orders, may see a strong backlash. On the other hand, before Gu Lixiong took office, he had already clamored to "build a real combat force and postpone the timetable for China (mainland)'s rash actions."
In the past two years, in order to strengthen the strength of the Taiwan military, the Taiwan authorities have continuously lowered the conscription threshold and tried every means to extend the time limit for conscription, but not only has they not received a positive response, but they have also been questioned about selling "dried mangoes" too much. In addition, bullying incidents have been repeatedly exposed in the Taiwan military, and incidents of soldiers committing suicide and fleeing from the army are not uncommon in the newspapers. The soldiers of the Taiwan army know very well that they have absolutely no chance of victory in the face of the PLA, and Chiu Kuo-cheng has also said that he does not expect the US military to come, and for the Taiwan army, the best outcome of the Taiwan issue is peaceful reunification.
Therefore, it is foreseeable that the relations between the authorities and the "old-school" Taiwan military during Lai Ching-te's term of office will inevitably deteriorate further, and the mainland will only need to wait and see what happens, and perhaps it will be able to get the desired results.
