In the Tang Dynasty more than 1,300 years ago, there was a royal palace that can be called the most brilliant and splendid in history - Daming Palace. The style of construction of this palace is not only in China, but also admired and imitated by overseas countries. However, the birth of this palace did not come from the impulse or practical ability of the emperor, but from a piece of the history of our dynasty.
It was 626 A.D., and the second emperor of our dynasty, Li Shimin, successfully seized the throne in the Xuanwumen Rebellion. His father, Li Yuan, after this coup d'état, could only reluctantly announce his abdication and became the first emperor in the history of our dynasty. Although he became the declining emperor, Li Yuan did not become old and frail because of this, but appeared to live longer. Perhaps it is precisely because of this longevity that he left a strong mark in the history of our dynasty.
After Li Yuan abdicated, he did not choose to leave the Taiji Palace, but chose to continue to live there. Although Taiji Palace used to be his main hall, with his abdication, it has lost its former prosperity and liveliness. Li Yuan's heart was full of loss, especially in summer, the Taiji Palace was low, and the climate was humid and hot, which made him feel extremely irritable. So, he made a seemingly unreasonable request to Li Shimin: he hoped to move out of Taiji Palace and live in Hongyi Palace in the west of the city.
When Li Shimin heard the news, he was secretly overjoyed. He knew that as long as Li Yuan moved away, he could rightfully move into the Taiji Palace and enjoy the glory that once belonged to his father. However, Li Shimin did not immediately agree to Li Yuan's request, but began to think about how to properly handle the matter. In the end, he decided to build a new dormitory for Li Yuan in the northeast of Taiji Palace, above the Dragon Shouyuan, and named it "Yong'an Palace".
This Yong'an Palace is the later Daming Palace. At that time, the Tang Dynasty had just experienced war, and the construction of Daming Palace was undoubtedly a huge project, which required a lot of manpower and material resources. However, Li Shimin had no choice but to bite the bullet and complete the task.
After several years of hard work, the Daming Palace was finally completed. The palace is huge and imposing, covering an area the size of a staggering five Forbidden City in Beijing. It has witnessed the ups and downs of the Tang Dynasty for more than 260 years and has become an indelible mark in the history of our dynasty.
