"Expired medicine is like leftover fruit"

The cause of the incident was that on February 27, 2019, Ms. Wang took 4 boxes of 40 bags of Deruixin vitamin C granules from the Hunan Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital.

According to Hunan media reports, she did not expect to find that after eating two boxes, these medicines had expired. The reporter saw on the official website of Hunan Provincial Maternal and Child Health Hospital that Wen Xiaoke is also the director of the pharmacy department and pharmaceutical research department of the hospital. Among them, seven departments, including Chinese medicine pharmacy, western pharmacy, outpatient and emergency pharmacy, and central pharmacy, all belong to the Department of Pharmaceutical Research. At present, the department has "established and improved various rules and regulations and standard operating procedures, realized the standardization and information management of the pharmaceutical research department, and provided safe, efficient and timely services for patients".

According to the above-mentioned website, the hospital is a third-class first-class maternal and child health hospital directly under the Hunan Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission.

"The medicine fell to the ground"

During this time, Ms. Wang had a hard time, "waking up with nightmares every night".

The reporter inquired about Deruixin vitamin C granules on the Internet and saw that the column of "medication for pregnant and lactating women" stated: This product can pass through the placenta and can be secreted into milk. Daily intake of this product in pregnant women may be harmful to the fetus, but it has not been confirmed by animal experiments.

The manufacturer of the drug is Hunan Yada Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. When consulted by reporters, the company's quality department said that the effect of expired drugs will be reduced, but the side effects are not large.

"If you're really not at ease, go to the hospital and have a look." The staff said that the shelf life of the drug was pushed forward by one month, but the problem of nearly two months of expiration needs to be reflected to the leadership.

Wen Xiaoke explained that there were expired medicines because the medicines fell to the ground, and no one found them in a short time.

Suspected of violating the law

So how do hospital pharmacies regulate drugs?

Zhu Sheng told reporters that all hospitals must follow a strict validity management process. Taking Union Medical College Hospital as an example, the hospital regularly checks the validity period every month, and it is managed by a special person, and has a validity period ledger and electronic supervision.

In addition, there is a professional verification standard of "four checks and ten pairs" when the drug is issued, and the electronic system has a warning when the validity period is approaching 6 months, which corresponds to the manual verification. In addition to drugs that have a very short expiration date, expired drugs or even drugs with a near-6 month expiration date will not appear in the warehouse.
