Recently, the reporter learned from the Mausoleum Museum of Qin Shi Huang that China and France will jointly carry out research on the protection of wooden relics and earthen sites of Notre Dame Cathedral and Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum.

Recently, the Mausoleum Museum of Qin Shi Huang reached an agreement with the French Cultural Heritage Science Foundation to carry out in-depth cooperation on the protection of wooden relics and earthen relics, including the protection and restoration of burned wood in Notre Dame Cathedral and the study of value cognition.

According to the agreement, the two parties will rely on the Sino-French cultural heritage such as the Mausoleum of the First Emperor of the Qin Dynasty and the Notre Dame Cathedral of Paris, and jointly carry out the research on the protection and restoration of the burned timber relics (charcoal) of the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Mausoleum of the First Emperor of the Qin Shi Huang Cathedral (charcoal) around the "scientific research on the protection of wooden relics and earthen sites", which is also the first time for a foreign team to participate in the research of the burned wood samples of Notre Dame Cathedral in France. At the same time, the research on soil protection technology was carried out for the pit soil site of the Qin Tombs and the soil materials used as architectural elements in France.

Notre Dame Cathedral under repair

The Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang in China and Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris are world-famous World Heritage Sites, both of which used a large number of wooden materials and there are still fire-burning wooden remains. For example, the construction of the Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses Pit used a large number of wooden components such as shed wood, fir wood, columns, and ground trees, and also unearthed wooden relics such as chariots and local components of weapons, which have been burned to varying degrees in history; Notre Dame Cathedral also retains a large number of wooden building elements, and its wooden roof trusses were severely burned down in 2019. Therefore, the two sides chose the common issue of wood heritage protection as the entry point for their cooperation and linked the two World Heritage sites.

On the other hand, archaeological sites such as the Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses Pit are mainly soil, and the protection of such earthen sites is different from that of common open-air earthen sites, so it is necessary to combine their own environmental and disease characteristics, and develop a sustainable scientific system for protection and utilization for the whole chain of archaeology, protection, research, display and utilization. The museum expressed its hope to work with French heritage institutions to carry out research on the protection of archaeological earthen sites, and to promote the concept of archaeological earthen site protection with Chinese characteristics in the international community.

It is understood that due to the scarcity and non-renewable nature of cultural relics resources, this cooperation, the two sides will first carry out basic research in the form of laboratory analysis and simulation experiments. Through an in-depth exploration of the wooden remains (especially the burned wooden remains) in the two cultural heritages of the Mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang and Notre Dame de Paris, as well as the material properties and historical value information of the archaeological sites, on the basis of laboratory experiments and simulation tests, the mechanism of heritage deterioration is summarized, and then the protection technology and methodology system suitable for the actual cultural relics are developed. At the same time, the two sides will also take advantage of this cooperation opportunity to jointly cultivate young talents in the scientific and technological protection of cultural heritage.
