Daily Legal Book Recommendations

Posner

2024.5.13 Legal Person Daily Sign: Innocence and Faith

Recommendation: The only current biography of Posner. At the age of 85, Judge Posner is a legend in contemporary legal circles, having written more than 50 books, more than 300 papers and more than 3,300 judgments. It's no wonder that there's a joke about Posner, "Rumor has it that Posner sleeps every night." Posner was not only industrious and prolific, but also a maverick, criticizing his academic peers when he taught at the university, criticizing judges and courts when he was a judge, and not saying what the public wanted to hear as a public intellectual. Judge, jurist, and public knowledge cannot sum up Posner, and this biography helps us see the complex and complete Posner behind the labels. Posner himself was a great supporter of the biography, not only granting the author access to Posner's archival materials in the University of Chicago Library, but also accepting numerous face-to-face interviews and numerous e-mail questions. On top of that, more than 200 Posner colleagues, classmates, and friends helped write this book. These ensure that the book is a true description and review of Posner's life and intellect.

Professor Su Li's recommendation: Professor Zheng Ge's vivid and accurate translation has reproduced Posner, the most creative, prolific jurist and judge in the contemporary United States, with an unrivaled academic and judicial citation rate, in the Chinese world!

Sex and the Law

2024.5.13 Legal Person Daily Sign: Innocence and Faith

Testimonial: "Sex is a great and mysterious motive force in human life, and a fascinating subject throughout the ages." It's hard to believe that such romantic words came from a serious judge, but that's exactly what William J. Justice J. Brennan's 1957 judgment in Ross v. Confederation. Since the establishment of the law, "sex" has always been the content of the law trying to regulate, and issues such as marriage, contraception, abortion, obscenity, and same-sex sexual behavior have caused fierce struggles in different eras. "Sex and the Law" is written from the ancient concept of sexuality and sexual customs to today's "Roe v. Wade", which for the first time tells the long history of the collision between "sex" and "law": on the one hand, the continuous evolution of "sexual" culture in different eras, and on the other hand, the continuous regulation of sexual behavior and expression by "law". The book tells a series of historical figures, events and precedents related to "sex", and the gripping views and vivid background of the times are intertwined into the process of the collision between "sexuality" and "law", with more than 60 exquisite illustrations. Columbia University Chancellor Lee C. Bollinger highly recommends: This book is sure to have a profound impact, and it will soon be on the required reading list, not only for law students and scholars, but also for all those who want to better understand this magnificent cultural change that will continue to shake society as a whole. The Last Glass: The Reign and Fall of Prohibition in the United States

2024.5.13 Legal Person Daily Sign: Innocence and Faith

One sentence recommends: "Wine—the friend who comforts people in a troubled world—has been pronounced dead." "The Prohibition era was a "wonderful" era in American history. It is inconceivable that Americans, who have always "regarded freedom as their life", have changed the constitution on which the nation was founded, declared war on alcohol with national force, and restricted one of the most important pastimes and rights in their personal lives, drinking, thus creating an era of extreme chaos and charm. The film and television works we are familiar with, such as "Atlantic Empire", "Once Upon a Time in America", "Iron Mask Selfless", and "The Legend of Moonshine", are all set in this period of history. The author has flipped through a vast archive of information and told readers about the whole process of the establishment and repeal of Prohibition and the social background of different stages, such as the Protestant faith in the United States, the feminist movement, progressivism, racial discrimination, the income tax movement, the reorganization of federal and state government powers, the anti-German movement in World War I, the rise of organized crime groups and other major historical events or changes, all of which have a great deal to do with the Prohibition movement. It can be said that this "last cup" condenses the history of changes in modern American society and is an excellent window for an in-depth understanding of the social, cultural and political game in the United States. The book won the 2011 Albert Beveridge Award of the American Historical Association. In the small wine glass, it can be described as treacherous, and the world is varied. This book is detailed ↓
