Early data suggest that they produce similar symptoms to JN.1, typically occurring 2 to 14 days after infection, which mainly affect the upper respiratory tract and include sore throat, nasal congestion, runny nose, cough, fever, headache, and loss of taste and smell.
While the symptoms and severity of KP.2 are similar to those of previous variants, they appear to be more contagious and worrying. Although existing vaccines are still effective, their protection against KP.2 may be reduced. Therefore, experts recommend that high-risk groups pay special attention to the progress of vaccination.
Lawrence Young, a virology authority at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, has issued a warning to be wary of a possible peak of KP.2 infections in the summer. While there is no evidence that it is more dangerous than other variants, we need to be vigilant and closely monitored.
There are no signs of a new strain on the mainland
Fortunately, according to the latest data from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, no signs of KP.2 transmission have been found in China. At present, the main epidemic in China is still the variant of the JN.1 series, and KP.2 has not yet spread in the mainland.
