How important is Yan civilization in Chinese archaeology? The 5th World Archaeological Forum held in Shanghai in 2023 awarded the "Lifetime Achievement Award" to Yan Wenming. This is the first time that the World Archaeological Forum has awarded this award to a Chinese archaeologist.

"This is not only a recognition of Mr. Yan Wenming's outstanding contribution to the development of archaeology, but also an affirmation of his tireless efforts to promote the importance of archaeology to the public for the common future of contemporary society and mankind," he said. ”

In fact, Yan Wenming has had a fate with Zhejiang archaeology for many years.

"Starting from the beautiful island (Liangzhu), crossing a ferry (Hemudu), crossing a bridge (cross-lake bridge), and finally going up the mountain (up the mountain). It is a poetic path to the ancient. Yan Wenming once described the 10,000-year-old romance of Zhejiang archaeology, and his footprints have also traveled all over these sites.

Xiang Ming, director of the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, said, "In the process of achievements and reflection, Zhejiang Neolithic archaeology has received a lot of attention and guidance from our other archaeological predecessors and peers in the industry, among which Mr. Yan Wenming of Peking University is a very important one." Mr. Yan has always been concerned about the Neolithic archaeology in Zhejiang, and his attention has almost been accompanied by the ups and downs of the development of Neolithic archaeology in Zhejiang. ”

Today, Jiang Leping, a researcher at the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and the discoverer of the Shangshan site, recalled to me the four "encounters" between Mr. Yan Wenming and the Shangshan site.

"Along the way, every step of the progress of the archaeological excavation research of the Shangshan site is under the guidance and care of Mr. Yan, and it has come to this day step by step." Jiang Leping said.

Twenty years ago, a Neolithic site in Pujiang County, Zhejiang Province, was unearthed, and its unique and never-before-seen cultural appearance made archaeologists both excited and headaches.

"At the time, the site was a shocking discovery, and because of its significance, it could be controversial. So we hope to have the support of an archaeologist like Mr. Yan. Jiang Leping recalled.

In 2003, Jiang Leping published the archaeological results of the Shangshan site in the "China Cultural Relics News", and "started" the name of "10,000 years on the mountain" in the archaeological community.

In the middle of December 2004, after the academic seminar on the cross-lake bridge site, Yan Wenming, who was concerned about the Shangshan site, made a special trip to Pujiang to charter a bus, and he and a group of archaeologists carefully studied the pottery and stone tools unearthed from the site, affirmed the longevity of the Shangshan site, and confirmed that the cultural connotation of the Shangshan site has distinctive regional characteristics, and is the source of the Neolithic culture in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

Yan Wenming's affirmation of the Shangshan site is also a great encouragement to local archaeologists. Less than a month later, in January 2005, the Zhejiang Provincial Bureau of Cultural Relics and the Pujiang County Government held a press conference to explain the discovery and significance of the Shangshan site, which effectively promoted the publicity of the Shangshan site. It can be said that this press conference "started" the name of the Shangshan site in front of the public.

"This press conference was held in a timely manner, and the Shangshan site was able to quickly attract the attention of the government, thanks to Mr. Yan's words." Jiang Leping said that not long after the press conference ended, even reporters from Japan's Asahi Shimbun came to interview.

Yan Wenming came to Pujiang for the second time, and something that was more milestone for the Shangshan site happened.

In November 2006, the 4th China Conference on Environmental Archaeology and the Symposium on Shangshan Ruins was held in Pujiang. More than 120 experts and scholars attended the meeting, listened to the report on the excavation results of the Shangshan site, inspected the site of the site, and studied the unearthed specimens. At the meeting, Yan Wenming made a high-level summary of the naming of "Shangshan Culture". As a result, the Shangshan culture was officially named.

Following the direction of "Shangshan Culture", archaeologists have discovered the big family of "Shangshan Culture" after unremitting efforts. They include, so far has been discovered Pujiang Shangshan site, Shengzhou Xiaohuangshan site, Yongkang temple mountain site, Yongkang Taipo Mountain site, Yongkang Xiaoshan site, Yongkang Changtian site, Yongkang Huxi site, Yongkang Great Wall site, Wuyi Dagong Mountain site, Jinhua Mountain Xiazhou site, Jinhua Qingyang Mountain site, Longyou Lotus Mountain site, Longyou Qingjie site, Longyou Xiaku site, Yiwu Qiaotou site, Dongyang Eagle Mountain site, Xianju Xiatang site, Linhaizhi mountain site, Jinhua Santan Mountain site and other 24 sites.

In 2013, Mr. Yan Wenming came to Quzhou, and after inspecting the archaeological site of Longyou Lotus Mountain Site and observing the unearthed cultural relics at the site, he commented: "The origin of artificial cultivation of rice has attracted much attention from Chinese and foreign academic circles, and the archaeological discoveries and research in Lotus Mountain Site and other places have been traced back to this source. ”

In 2016, the 10th anniversary of the naming of "Shangshan Culture" and the International Symposium on the Origin of Rice Agriculture were held, and Yan Wenming also attended the meeting. At the meeting, he said that the ruins in Zhejiang are very interesting, "starting from the beautiful island (Liangzhu), crossing a ferry (Hemudu), crossing a bridge (cross-lake bridge), and finally going up the mountain (going up the mountain)." It is a poetic path to the ancient. ”

Jiang Leping still remembers that on this trip to the mountain, Mr. Yan Wenming gave great affirmation to the construction of the Shangshan Archaeological Site Park, and greatly appreciated the beautiful and comprehensive exhibition in the Shangshan Ruins Museum, which was another encouragement.

In 2020, at the academic symposium on the 20th anniversary of the discovery of the Shangshan site, Mr. Yan Wenming was 88 years old, and his physical condition did not allow him to come to Pujiang again. Jiang Leping said that he often visits Mr. Yan and has always attached great importance to the settlement of settlements in the Shangshan culture. Before the start of the meeting, Jiang Leping asked Professor Qin Ling of Peking University whether he could ask Mr. to write an inscription for the Shangshan site "The First Village in Ancient China". It didn't take long for Yan Wenming to reply and write two inscriptions for Jiang Leping to choose.

"I am really very touched that Mr. Yan's reply is still kept in my office." Jiang Leping said.

On the eve of the academic symposium on the 20th anniversary of the discovery of the Shangshan site, Yan Wenming was interviewed by Zhejiang Daily, congratulating the upcoming academic seminar and giving high hopes. He said, "[Shangshan] found the earliest remains of cultivated rice in China, that is, the earliest rice culture in the world. At the same time, Pujiang also discovered, especially the Qiaotou site next to it, a large number of painted pottery was found, and this painted pottery is also the earliest in the world. The two earliest, it's not easy" "Rice agriculture is the world's first, painted pottery is the world's first, such a culture, such a site, of course, is eligible to apply for world cultural heritage, I am in favor!" ”

As a result, the road to the World Heritage of 10,000 years on the mountain began.

Sir Eternal! Nowadays, a bird's-eye view of the back of the old mountain of Pujiang River, the "First Village of Ancient China" hidden in the grass and trees is dazzling, which is a superimposed shadow of 10,000 years or even eternity.
