Recently, the finals of the first Hypak™ Design National College Student Theme Design Competition kicked off at the Shanghai Institute of Innovation and Creative Design (DIIS) on the North Bund, and the top three were voted on the spot.
This design competition is the first large-scale open innovation project launched by DIIS in cooperation with the settled enterprise Qingyun Kunlun ™ New Material Laboratory. With the theme of "Gifts", the contestants were required to design and produce different types of works using Kunlun ™ materials. ™ The material has the characteristics of waterproof, breathable, light weight and high strength, and at the same time, it has a unique touch and special texture, which brings new possibilities for new designers. Since its launch in December 2023, the organizers have received enthusiastic applications from more than 400 college students from more than 20 universities around the world, and more than 50 valid works have entered the preliminary competition, covering multiple fields ranging from industrial design, product design to fashion design. After the preliminary review and the review of the expert judges, the final 10 works successfully advanced to the finals.
Cultural and creative gift boxes with integrated packaging contents, personalized lamps that can be transformed into containers, educational paper boxes designed for children, and rewritable children's books...... At the final scene, the works with both originality and value were pleasantly surprised. The final judges came from Tongji University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai Normal University, ShanghaiTech University, Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts and other universities and co-organizers. After the jury evaluated from multiple dimensions such as innovative design, solving practical problems, commercial feasibility, and sustainable concepts, the top three proposals stood out, followed by Li Xinyu from Shanghai Normal University who designed a gift for plants - a "bloomable" flower planter folded through waterproof and breathable materials, a portable pneumatic U-shaped pillow based on the principle of inflatable deformation developed by Yu Sinan of Tongji University, and Dong Runlin, Zhou Zihan and Wu Yuting from ShanghaiTech University Reminder gift box.
"This competition is not only an innovation in design, but also a demonstration of the ability to transform ideas into real products." The relevant person in charge of DIIS said that as one of the few design competitions that can directly transform students' works into landing products, the Hypak™ Design Design Competition requires participants not only to consider the artistry and practicality of the design, but also to deeply explore the commercial feasibility of the work and make a prototype. Different from traditional competitions, the final review of this finals is not an end, but a starting point for the transformation and implementation of innovative design. After the competition, Qingyun New Materials will promote the commercial implementation of some contestants' works according to the opinions of the review meeting.
