Yan Yifeng: I'm a male nurse!

author:Shangguan News

People gather because of the city, and the city prospers with people. Countless strivers from all walks of life in the three islands have worked intensively for the development of Chongming, and we have successively launched a series of interviews with people who are "I'm in Chongming, I'm very good", inviting these strivers to tell the stories that belong to them and Chongming, and to pay tribute to every ordinary hero who participated in the construction of a world-class ecological island.

When it comes to nurses, the image of a gentle and affectionate woman may first come to mind. Today, however, nursing care is no longer the preserve of women, and the proportion of men in the nursing profession is increasing and becoming an indispensable force. On the eve of International Nurses' Day on May 12, the reporter came to Chongming Hospital (Chongming Branch of Xinhua Hospital) affiliated to Shanghai Health Medical College and interviewed a male nurse in the ICU.

Unlike the hustle and bustle of the general ward, the ICU on the fourth floor of the emergency building is particularly quiet. This is the transit point of life, and it is also the battlefield of the male nurse Yan Yifeng. At 7:20 a.m., as usual, Yan Yifeng came to the locker room, first changed into work shoes, work clothes, put on a hat and mask, disinfected his hands, and then entered the ward to start a busy day. "We accept the most critically ill and complex patients here, and our job is to do our best to save these people who are on the verge of death."

More important than family

Yan Yifeng: I'm a male nurse!

"Quickly, notify the doctor on duty that the condition of the 5-bed patient has changed and needs to be rescued immediately." One afternoon, when Yan Yifeng was on patrol, he found that a patient in shock suddenly deteriorated, became unconscious, and disappeared spontaneously...... While calling for someone to notify the doctor, he immediately performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the patient, using a simple breathing balloon to assist in ventilation. When the doctor arrived, he assisted the doctor in intubating the patient's trachea and administering the rescue medication according to the doctor's instructions. "There you have, there you have it!" After half an hour of continuous resuscitation, the patient's ECG monitor fluctuated and his blood pressure returned to normal. Seeing the moment the patient struggled back from the line of death, Yan Yifeng breathed a long sigh of relief.

In the ICU, such rescues often occur. "Every minute, every second counts." This is also an extreme test of nurses' emergency response ability and professionalism.

"Relatives of critically ill patients cannot accompany them in the ICU, we need to monitor the changes in the patient's condition 24 hours a day, and we need to participate in the basic care and daily care of the patient." In Yan Yifeng's view, in this case, nurses are not only medical roles, but also "family members" of patients. "In times of crisis, we will not give up on any patient until we do our best."

Powerful, careful, love to study

Yan Yifeng: I'm a male nurse!

In hospitals, male nurses are mostly assigned to emergency and medical and surgical ICUs. Because they can not only pierce the needle but also carry the patient, have insight and research, and are "warm men" with both strength and gentleness.

Male nurses have a natural advantage in "physical work" such as transporting patients, turning over care, and carrying equipment. "Boys have more strength than girls, and they are more suitable for this part of the work, and I always rush to the front." Yan Yifeng introduced that some ICU patients are seriously ill and will have many tubes left on their bodies, "There are tracheal tubes, deep venous catheters, gastric tubes, urinary catheters, etc., each tube has its own function, which is the means of treatment, observation of the condition and the basis for judging the prognosis, also known as the 'pipeline of life'." "Every time a patient is moved, Yan Yifeng is extra careful, not only properly fixing the pipes, but also paying attention to the surrounding situation to avoid accidents.

In terms of professional nursing, male nurses can also be competent for more detailed nursing work, such as oral care. Some patients with endotracheal intubation are prone to the growth and reproduction of bacteria due to the open airway and reduced oral self-cleaning ability, which can lead to lung infections once these bacteria enter the lungs through the oral cavity, so the cleaning of the oral cavity is very important. Each time, Yan Yifeng will skillfully use tweezers to pick up cotton balls containing sterile solutions, and wipe the outer surface, inner surface, and occlusal surface of the patient's teeth in turn to prevent the patient from being infected.

And it's easier for male nurses to get started when operating instruments. As a nurse in the ICU, she must also master advanced equipment such as CRRT hemodialysis machines, high-flow ventilators, micropumps, and PICCO detectors to assist in the rescue of critically ill patients at any time. Every time a new equipment arrives, Yan Yifeng uses his off-duty time to study the equipment, consult relevant information, consult equipment engineers, practice the operation repeatedly after understanding the operating principle, and share the results he has learned with his colleagues in the department.

A choice made "from the heart".

Due to his outstanding work performance, Yan Yifeng was appointed as the deputy head nurse of the ICU. Speaking of his original career choice, Yan Yifeng firmly said, "This is a choice from the heart." He recalled that one day during the winter vacation of his third year of high school, he went to the hospital because of a foot injury, and happened to see medical staff running to rescue a patient who was sent by a 120 ambulance. "The scene of that first aid was the same as what I saw in the TV series. In my heart, the image of the angel in white is so sublime and great. When he filled in the volunteer in the third year of high school, he resolutely applied for the medical major, and was finally successfully admitted to the nursing major of Hebei Medical University.

After graduating, he returned to his hometown of Chongming to become a nurse and has been working for 8 years now. Yan Yifeng has seen too many "human worlds", and all he can do is to do his duty and do his best to make every patient recover. "In the eyes of many people, we see too much birth, old age, sickness and death, and we may become numb. But it's not, we have to be calm and rational when we work. Because nursing work is also "guts work". Some patients are in critical condition when they are sent to the hospital, and their families are inevitably emotional, so they need to come forward and communicate with their families to comfort them, while fully assisting in the treatment in a professional state.

ICUs often experience a sudden increase in patients and a shortage of nursing staff, so temporary overtime is common. Yan Yifeng never hesitated to protect the lives of patients, because his lover is also a nurse. Knowing the importance of the position, they understand each other and tolerate each other.
