Feng Liping is the head nurse and chief nurse of the first ward of cardiothoracic surgery of Zhenjiang First People's Hospital, and she has been working in cardiothoracic surgery for 28 years since she joined the company. Over the past 28 years, Feng Liping has lit up the light of hope for every patient with her rigorous work attitude and exquisite nursing skills, and is the "spiritual guardian" of cardiothoracic surgery. She has been awarded the honorary titles of "Advanced Individual in Fighting the New Coronary Pneumonia Epidemic" in Jiangsu Province, "38 Red Flag Bearer" in Jiangsu Province, and "Lei Feng Model of Post Learning" in Jiangsu Province.

"Stayed" in the intensive care unit for 28 years

"I've been in the intensive care unit of cardiothoracic surgery since I came to the hospital when I was 20 years old." Feng Liping told reporters that this "residence" is 28 years.

In 1996, after graduating from Zhenjiang Health School, Feng Liping joined the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery of Zhenjiang First People's Hospital and became a nurse. There is a saying in the nursing industry: three points of treatment, seven points of care. "Most of the patients in our ward are heart patients, and the effect of postoperative care is directly related to the life and health of patients. Feng Liping said that in the intensive care unit of the ICU, no one can enter except for medical staff, and all the affairs of patients are completed by nurses, from washing their faces and brushing their teeth to feeding three meals a day.

Feng Liping's most memorable time was when she sat in front of a hospital bed for seven or eight hours while nursing a patient.

The patient developed symptoms of delirium after surgery, unconsciously babbling gibberish, and swinging his arms. "She had a heart transplant and needed to stay in the intensive care unit for a long time. Due to the large number of tubes on her body, the patient was very uncomfortable, and her hands kept moving, so I sat on the edge of her bed and grabbed her hand in order to prevent her from touching the tubes. Feeding food, feeding medicine, putting on shoes, and covering the quilt, Feng Liping did not dare to slack off at all, except for going to the toilet, eating, etc., she insisted on it for seven or eight hours until the shift was handed over. Two and a half months later, with the careful treatment and care of the medical team, the patient returned to normal.

Injections, medicines, beds, infusions...... In the day-to-day nursing work, Feng Liping has gradually grown from a new nurse to a department nursing backbone with solid business ability.

Tooth marks on the arm

Arriving at the ward at 7 a.m. and leaving the hospital at nearly 7 p.m. has been the norm for Feng Liping for many years. Every morning, after she arrives at the hospital an hour early, she has to conduct a routine inspection of the ward, ask about the patient's recovery, record the shift handover in detail and guide the nurse on duty that day, and identify the patients that need to be focused on that day. "I have been in the department since 2017, and what I admire most over the years is that every morning when we have a meeting, we don't need to report anything, and the head nurse already knows everything about the situation of patients at night." Wu Yunzhi, a nurse in the first ward of cardiothoracic surgery, said with emotion.

Feng Liping's conscientiousness and responsibility are well-known in the department. There is a tooth mark on her arm, which is still clearly visible after many years, and everyone is distressed and admired when it comes to this past.

"At that time, a patient who had just undergone heart bypass surgery was developing delirium symptoms in the intensive care unit. He suddenly jumped up and was about to pull out the tube, and I happened to be guarding his bedside, and when I found him jumping, I quickly grabbed him. Unexpectedly, as soon as he was nervous, he opened his mouth and grabbed my arm and bit it down hard......" Feng Liping said, screaming in pain at the time. Subsequently, several male doctors and nurses on duty rushed to the ward when they heard the sound, grabbed the patient, and tried to free her, but the more they pulled, the tighter the other party bited, and finally let go. "It was winter, and I was wearing a sweater, but when I took off my clothes, I found that the wound was already bloody and the whole piece of flesh was almost falling off." Feng Liping said.

Working in the ward, there are many thrilling things, but it is also full of warmth. After an elderly person is discharged from the hospital, he often sends a message to Feng Liping, and wishes her a happy holiday every year on Nurses' Day. As long as her body allows, the old man will come to the ward to send her holiday blessings. "These little kindnesses are also the motivation for my work, and I feel very warm."

Donors who don't hesitate

As a medical professional, Feng Liping always puts patients first. In 2020, she took the initiative to sign up for aid to Hubei and served as the captain of the second batch of medical teams in Zhenjiang City to aid Wuhan. She led the team to help the Sino-French New Town Campus of Tongji Hospital Affiliated to Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Wuhan Pulmonary Hospital, where they fought for 71 days, which was the longest team among all the Zhenjiang medical teams and the last group of Zhenjiang team members to return.

Feng Liping's dedication, in addition to her own professional field, she is also the hospital's first hematopoietic stem cell donation volunteer.

As early as 2004, Feng Liping and her colleagues signed up to join the China Bone Marrow Bank. One day in 2016, she received a call from the staff of the Zhenjiang Red Cross Society, informing her that her bone marrow had been successfully matched with a leukemia patient, and asked if she would like to donate hematopoietic stem cells, and she replied without hesitation: "I do!" At that time, she was 40 years old.

Feng Liping has a sweet appearance and looks weak and petite, and some friends are very worried about her thin body and persuade her not to donate. "I understand the patient's desire for life, and the hard-won success of the match means that the leukaemia patient has hope of continuing to live, potentially saving a family," she said. After that, she resolutely signed the consent form to donate hematopoietic stem cells. And she didn't tell Corey's colleagues and family about it until two days before her departure.

After a series of procedures such as high-resolution matching testing and physical examination, in November 2016, she went to Nanjing to complete the marrow donation accompanied by the staff of the Zhenjiang Red Cross Society. She also became the 58th case in Zhenjiang, the 534th case in the province, and the 6108th successful donor in the country. Under her influence, 31 young people from the First People's Hospital of Zhenjiang City collected blood samples and joined the China Bone Marrow Bank and became glorious hematopoietic stem cell donation volunteers.

Feng Liping's professional dedication has also been influencing her colleagues in the department, she has been leading the team to continuously learn and improve nursing skills, and at the same time, she has also passed on the "people-oriented" nursing concept to more young nurses through practical actions. "The head nurse has high requirements for us, and when we encounter some serious patients or difficult cases, she will lead us to learn the latest nursing concepts, and she will also guide us when carrying out nursing work for patients." Colleague Yong Chen said.

In the corridors of the hospital, Feng Liping's steps are always hurried and steady. She shuttles between wards, capturing every detail of patients with her bright eyes and bringing endless comfort to patients with her warm hands. Under her leadership, the nursing work of the first ward of cardiothoracic surgery is full of professionalism and humanistic care, and has also won many pennants. "We nursing workers should put the needs of patients first, use our professional skills, and use care and patience to make patients feel the warmth of home in the hospital."
