Grades are modified by "noisy"? College teachers said they were repeatedly asked to revise students' grades

author:Released by Longnanli County

Recently, a full-time teacher from the School of Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology of Xi'an University of Science and Technology reported to reporters: In January this year, after the final results of the course he took came out, the parents of a student with unqualified grades asked the student to revise his grades on the grounds of "affecting the child's future" and "causing a stain", and verbally threatened the teacher. The relevant personnel of the college also mentioned many times that the parent "has a background" and asked the teacher to revise the grades.

In addition, the teacher also reported that in order to modify the grade of another student who took the make-up examination, the college transferred the grade entry authority of the course from the system without the teacher's knowledge, and other teachers modified the unqualified grade to a passing score.

Teachers were asked to revise their grades from various quarters

The parent claimed to be a researcher at a research institute

On May 9, the reporter contacted the teacher Qin Feng (who used a pseudonym at the request of the interviewee), who said: "Since January this year, I have been exhausted, and I have not received a fair answer and a trace of comfort from the relevant departments, but I have become an 'alternative' and a 'negative teaching material'." Don't know what exactly I'm doing wrong? ”

Qin Feng told reporters that on January 6, 2024, he submitted the results of the examination of the professional courses he taught. At 11 p.m. on January 8, he received a call from a parent of a student Chen, who claimed to be a researcher at a research institute, and asked to revise his child's grades because his child was studying for a bachelor's and master's degree and failing to pass the grades would affect his future.

In a recording of the conversation provided by Qin Feng, the parent can be heard saying, "I will make the actual situation clear, if you can't do it, I will definitely run to the school to make trouble with you", "I will follow you wherever you are", "I have something to do with a teacher in your school". Qin Feng said that for a while, he was worried about the safety of himself and his family. In the thirtieth year of the Chinese New Year's Eve, I again received a text message from the student's parents, questioning that it was too difficult for him to write the questions and reading the papers at will, saying that he would go to the Education Department to sue him.

"The grade of this course is composed of two parts, one is the paper grade, and the other is the usual grade, and I gave this student's usual score of 90 points, which is relatively high. However, the paper score is 25 points. According to our scale, the overall score is 45 points. Qin Feng said that he checked the student's test paper as soon as he returned to school on January 10 on a business trip and made sure that he did not give the wrong score.

According to the official website of Xi'an University of Science and Technology, Qin Feng is an associate professor and master's supervisor, and the course he teaches is his main research field.

"In those days, I received phone calls and WeChat messages from the faculty members and college leaders in a row, asking for the student's grades to be revised, and I also mentioned many times that the student's parents were members of the academician team of a research institute." Qin Feng said that although he is not noble, he is absolutely principled in doing things. "At that time, I made it clear that my attitude was definitely not going to change. If you can modify your grades at will, it will be unfair to other students who listen carefully and prepare for exams. ”

To Qin Feng's surprise, on February 26, on the first day of school, 19 students jointly went to the school's academic affairs office to report that they wanted to review their results. It is understood that 72 students took the exam for the course, and 38 students failed the test.

In order to ensure the fairness of the examination, the college has set up a supervision team to review the examination papers. "The result of the review is that my questions meet the requirements of the syllabus, the difficulty level is moderate, and there is no problem in grading."

A student in the class told reporters that the difficulty of the exam in this course was moderate. My academic performance is also average, before the exam I reviewed the teacher's usual homework and lecture PPT, the exam results were qualified, 6 people in the dormitory, 5 were qualified. The student also said that the teacher would be graded at the end of the term, and he gave a good evaluation to the teacher's evaluation of this course.

The school's Academic Affairs Office issued a letter investigating the incident

On March 5, the parents of the students came to the school to report the teaching problems of Mr. Qin Feng, and for this reason, the school's academic affairs office issued a special letter on the investigation of the incident.

"After a day of investigation, it turned out that I didn't have any problems with teaching. But I'm more curious, the syllabus and other information belong to internal information, which is relatively private. How did parents find out? Qin Feng also raised his own questions.

On May 9, the reporter dialed the phone number of the parent of the classmate Chen, and after clarifying the intention, the parent said that "it is inconvenient to answer the phone when he is busy", and in response to the matter of understanding the child's grades, the parent said "no need", and then hung up the phone.

According to the regulations of the school, students who fail to pass the examination have the opportunity to make up the examination. At the end of March, a notice was issued in the "Working Group of the School of Surveying and Mapping": the make-up examination of this semester is scheduled to start on March 28, and the teacher needs to send the test questions to be printed at the specified time.

The make-up examination papers of the courses taught by Qin Feng were told that another team leader would write the questions and mark the papers, and Qin Feng was only responsible for entering the final grades. In this make-up examination, the above-mentioned student Chen's make-up examination results were passed.

Another student failed the make-up exam

Threatens to jump off a building

Teacher Qin Feng thought that the "big stone" pressed in his heart had landed. On April 26, the teacher who marked the make-up examination told him that in the make-up examination, there was another fourth-year student Wang who failed the make-up examination, which may affect his undergraduate graduation and graduate studies.

"This time, he still asked for a revision of his grades, and the students also threatened to jump off the building. Although I am not a grader, I just submitted the results of the make-up examination, and for the sake of prudence, I checked the student's results by the way, and there was no problem with the marking. And at that time, I also specially asked the marking teacher to review the paper again, and the grades were fine. Because I didn't read the papers, I logged in as many points as the teacher gave me. Qin Feng said.

"When I checked the system on the afternoon of April 30, there was no longer this course in my grade system." Qin Feng said that the retest score of this student Wang has been revised to 60 points. "I didn't see the volume, it was probably destroyed."

Why is there an embarrassment of revising the results of the otherwise normal exam? Why are test scores that are within the reasonable authority of teachers to be interfered with by multiple parties? What is the pressure that makes the college privately revise student grades? In response to many questions, the reporter contacted the school's propaganda department, and the relevant staff told the reporter that the school has set up an investigation team, and other information is not clear.
