Chronic atrophic gastritis is a precancerous condition of gastric cancer. So, how long does it take to go from gastritis to stomach cancer? What causes chronic atrophic gastritis? Under what circumstances does cancer occur?
In this issue, we invite Pan Feng, vice president and chief TCM physician of Hangzhou Red Cross Hospital, to tell you how to minimize the risk of cancer and stay away from stomach cancer.

Chronic atrophic gastritis to gastric cancer
It's a long process
With the increase in everyone's attention to stomach health problems, the concept of "chronic atrophic gastritis" has also appeared in the public eye, so under what circumstances will chronic atrophic gastritis develop into gastric cancer?
From a pathological point of view, atrophic gastritis diagnosed after gastroscopic biopsy is a precancerous lesion of gastric cancer recognized by the digestive community.
However, this does not mean that atrophic gastritis will definitely develop into gastric cancer, and the probability of cancerous transformation is less than 1%.
Moreover, it is a long process to develop from atrophic gastritis to gastric cancer, which is divided into mild, moderate, and severe, followed by intestinal metaplasia, then dysplasia, and finally gastric cancer.
Intestinal metaplasia, that is, the epithelial cells of the gastric mucosa are replaced by intestinal epithelial cells after atrophy, just like "wheat grows in a rice field", and intestinal metaplasia is also divided into mild, moderate, and severe.
This is followed by dysplasia, in which the cells that appear are neither the cells of the stomach nor the intestines, and dysplasia is also classified as mild, moderate, and severe. When severe dysplasia progresses, the likelihood of stomach cancer is greatly increased.
Director Pan said that each of the above development processes may take several years to more than ten years.

Chronic atrophic gastritis
Predisposing factors
01Poor eating and lifestyle habits
Gastric diseases and diet have a great relationship, in daily life, spicy and stimulating food, tobacco and alcohol, coffee and strong tea, etc. are easy to cause gastric mucosal damage, inflammation, and long-term gastric mucosal atrophy.
In addition, excessive stress and staying up late for a long time will also affect the overall health of the person, leading to a decrease in the body's immunity and increasing the possibility of stomach diseases.
02 Helicobacter pylori infection
Helicobacter pylori has a high infection rate in the continental population, approaching 50%.
This is related to the eating habits of people who like to have dinner together and do not often use chopsticks, which will greatly increase the chance of Helicobacter pylori infection.
The enzymes produced after Helicobacter pylori infection can damage the gastric mucosal barrier, leading to inflammation of the gastric mucosa, which is an important causative factor in atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer.
