In Xinyi District, Taipei, Taiwan, the Fubon Art Museum, designed by internationally renowned architect Renzo Piano and his studio Renzo Piano Building Workshop (RPBW), will open on May 4, 2024. As RPBW's first design project in Taiwan, this design seems to be more "mediocre" than the master's previous works, lacking Piano's usual high-tech design label. The simple interspersed blocks make the whole building more calm of the Chinese and less romantic of the Italians.

The five-storey museum is designed with uninterrupted ceilings and open spaces in which artworks expand freely, interact with the space, and inspire a rich visual and emotional dialogue. Among them, the "Water View Exhibition Hall" on the first floor is designed with transparent glass curtains, which are light and penetrating, seamlessly connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces, so that passers-by can also get a glimpse of the artistic style in the museum.

Light is a central theme throughout the building's design. In particular, the "Daylight Gallery" and the "Starlight Gallery" on the third floor bring sunlight into the interior through skylights, and cleverly use different roller blinds to adjust the light, providing the best natural light environment for the artworks. This careful treatment of light not only enhances the visual effect of the exhibits, but also creates an immersive viewing experience.

In addition, Fubon Art Museum is also deeply engaged in education and public participation. The "Landscape Workshop" on the ground floor provides a multi-functional space suitable for small lectures, children's workshops or multimedia exhibitions. On the other hand, the museum shop "Daeko Sousho" offers a wide variety of products through the concept of curation, from special exhibition souvenirs to books, each product is an exploration of creativity.

On top of the elegant and light white building of Fubon Art Museum, a bright red boom has become the highlight of the museum's appearance. The boom is not only used as a window washer, but also can be used to hang large-scale art installations in conjunction with outdoor exhibitions, adding an innovative impetus to the museum. The expansive plaza and public art installations in front of the gallery break down the boundaries between indoor and outdoor, turning the entire city into a vivid canvas of art.

The design concept of the A25 campus is centered on the "urban forest", which echoes Fubon Group's goal of promoting sustainable development, aiming to bring back a large area of greenery to the city and create an urban living space where people and nature coexist in harmony. Surrounded by abundant vegetation and landscaped walkways, the building is equipped with lounge seating, transforming the busy commercial space into an urban oasis of tranquility and comfort. This design combines architecture with natural elements such as light, water, and greenery, providing citizens with a space for rest and inspiration that is both modern and natural.

While the design may be seen as missing Piano's signature high-tech design elements, it reflects the architect's deep understanding of the cultural and functional needs of the region. By suppressing excessive ornamentation and formalism, Piano focused on how to better serve the display of art and culture through the simplicity and purity of the building itself.

Overall, the design of the Fubon Art Museum in Taipei demonstrates Renzo Piano's consideration of cultural sensitivity in his architectural practice, and his ability to integrate architecture with the cultural environment of the city. This museum is not only a new cultural landmark in Taipei, but also the focus of attention in the global art and architecture community.
