Memories of Lao Cai

Memories of Lao Cai

This is the backstreet of my hometown, and the world around it has changed dramatically over the decades, only its appearance has not changed. It's still a narrow alley, with dilapidated houses and roadside stalls selling the same goods as they did twenty or thirty years ago.

Memories of Lao Cai

Time passes, and only here can you find the old days. In the bedding store, bed sheets, blankets and other items are still hung as before, and here, you can still find the most popular styles from twenty or thirty years ago - large peonies, camellias, pink, light yellow, sky blue sheets.

Memories of Lao Cai

There are all kinds of jewelry on the roadside stalls, and when I was a child, I used to want to have such a beautiful bracelet!

Memories of Lao Cai

Socks are also sold on the side of the road, and even the style is still the same as when I was a child.

Memories of Lao Cai

This street used to be bustling, especially on market days, it was crowded with people, rubbing shoulders one after another, but now, it is no longer the glory of the past, it is deserted, and most of the people who go shopping are old people.

Memories of Lao Cai

Who knows! This kind of carrier used to carry me on my back, my sister on my back, and now it carries my child to the age of two and a half.

Memories of Lao Cai

It's an old-fashioned yarn shop, and for as long as I can remember, I've always accompanied my mom here to buy yarn. My mother would use her skillful hands to knit beautiful sweaters for my sister and me. She also bought a reference book to weave all kinds of patterns on our sweaters, including apples, pears, watermelons and other fruits, as well as sea lion top balls and flowers. These sweaters have been with me throughout my childhood.

Memories of Lao Cai

Bamboo pot lids, back baskets, dustpans, baskets, etc., are all hand-made, and my family used to have a lot of them, but they gradually disappeared in the passage of time. In my memory, the family also invited a master to weave a basket and make a broom with bamboo. I'm afraid that children growing up in the city have never seen these things!

Memories of Lao Cai

In the past, there were stalls for repairing shoes and bicycles, but with the changes of the times, these stalls have gradually disappeared.

Memories of Lao Cai

This grocery store has seen my sister and I grow up almost the entirely. For as long as I can remember, I used to accompany my grandparents to this store to buy things, and at that time, my grandparents used to leave my sisters in the store for a while, and they went to buy other things, and then picked us up when they were done. We sat on the little bench, watching TV, waiting for our grandparents to pick us up. It's been almost 30 years now, and the shop is still the same, but the people in the shop are old, and my grandparents have long since passed away. This May Day, I came to the store again, the proprietress greeted my mother, saw me, and shouted: Wow, long time no see, I have gained weight! Even the baby is so big! When I think about it, the last time I came to this shop was fifteen years ago.

Time is like an arrow, taking away people's youth, but it also engraves good memories in every corner of the old street. Time is old, memories are not old. Let's go back to Lao Cai often!
