Six Penn students previously said they had received emails from the school informing them that they would not be allowed to participate in any academic activities, including classes, exams and research, for the remainder of the semester due to their participation in the recent pro-Palestinian protests on campus, as well as commencement ceremonies.
In the early hours of the same day, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was also intervened by the police, with President Kornbrus saying at least 10 people had been arrested, but declined to say how many students had been suspended. More than a dozen protesters chanted "peace" slogans on nearby sidewalks while police arrested the demonstrators.
None of the demonstrators at the two schools resisted arrest and the scene was relatively peaceful. But MIT student movement organizers were unconvinced, saying on social media that no one could stop the movement and that the student protesters would return.
According to the Associated Press, more than 2,600 people have been arrested at universities across the country for supporting Palestinian protests. Earlier on May 8, police in Washington, D.C., cleared a pro-Palestinian protest camp at George Washington University, arresting 33 people. Columbia's campus has calmed down after mass arrests and clearances, and now the campus is fully open to resume the situation before the occupancy.
