An important feature of the Nintendo Switch will be discontinued on June 10

A minor but commonly used online feature of the Nintendo Switch – the integration feature – is about to disappear. Nintendo has announced that it will discontinue the feature, affecting users who use the feature to share Nintendo Switch screenshots and gameplay videos on major social media platforms.

Over the years, many video games and gaming platforms have used features related to social media platforms like Facebook and X to allow players to connect with real-world friends and followers in the game. The PS3 multiplayer spin-off, The Last of Us: Factions, integrates the ability to link personal PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts in order to populate the game with names from a player's list of friends and family.

For Switch players, though, the online integration feature in the console will disappear in a matter of weeks. The company announced the move through its official Twitter account. Allegedly, from June 10, 2024, players will not be able to post screenshots and videos directly to X via the Switch album. Social features related to X features are also impacted, as players will no longer be able to send friend requests to others on X through Switch's friend suggestion feature.

Some major Switch games will also be affected by this decision. In the linked support article, Nintendo stated that the ability to post directly to X and Facebook via the Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3 in-game mailboxes will be removed, but the mailbox itself will remain for in-game posting. Players can still draw and post images in Splatoon 3, but if they want to post them on social media, they will need to manually upload them by downloading them from Switch and downloading them to a computer or other device. At the same time, Splatoon 2 will no longer show player-created posts. Instead, the location of the player's post will be replaced by a pre-created character and image. With the exception of Splatoon games, image and video sharing from Switch albums to Facebook will not be affected, though Nintendo says the feature may be removed "later".

Nintendo did not explain why it stopped supporting X on Nintendo Switch. However, some reactions online pointed out that the company's move was in line with Sony's approach, which removed the same feature on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in November 2023. Some critics have speculated that the rising cost of accessing the X API (a key part of enabling X functionality in external programs) is the reason for the recent wave of companies withdrawing X support.
