Breaking into tourists' hotel rooms and kidnapping people
According to a number of Thai media reports, on April 25, local time, a number of men claiming to be Thai police broke into the hotel room where Chinese tourists lived, saying that five Chinese tourists in the hotel had violated relevant laws and needed to go to the police station for investigation.
According to surveillance footage released by the police, members of the criminal gang detained Chinese tourists and took them to a car parked outside the hotel and taken to a remote location.
On the way, members of the criminal gang tried to threaten Chinese tourists to transfer money to designated accounts. Fearing arrest, the Chinese tourists contacted their Chinese friends in Cambodia and transferred 2.5 million baht (about 480,000 yuan) to the account of the criminal gang, which was later released.

After several days of investigation, on May 6, Ding Dan police arrested two suspects in the gang, Su and Yang. Among them, Su was charged with extortion, impersonating a public official, illegal detention and coercion, and Yang was arrested for accepting stolen goods.
The investigation found that this was a kidnapping and ransom gang led by Su, and the target was those Chinese citizens who went to Thailand. Once the target is identified, the gang carries out their plan as a police officer.
The above-mentioned gang committed a very tight crime, and it was difficult for the victims to see the flaws under the panic. When the victim contacts a Laotian gang to redeem a ransom with a credit card, one of the women in the gang prepares a card reader and meets the victim.
After that, several other members of the gang posing as police officers went into action, detaining the victims in a white Toyota Camry and threatening them to seven years in prison if they paid the ransom with a credit card. Subsequently, the gang will provide a QR code that will allow the victim to pay for cryptocurrency, which will be transferred to the gang's digital wallet.
After Su was arrested, he confessed to participating in an extortion scheme. According to his confession, it was Yang who was responsible for handling the cryptocurrency. When Yang gets the cryptocurrency, he converts it into Thai baht and distributes the funds to other gang members. The 34-year-old Laotian woman who was responsible for preparing the card reader was detained on May 4 local time.

In addition, three suspects are still being pursued, and the three fugitives are a 56-year-old Chinese citizen, a 26-year-old Thai and a 34-year-old police officer from Bangkok, and the police are actively pursuing them.
At present, there is still one suspect to be identified. The police have recovered some of the money, and the remaining funds are still being traced.
