How does hip-hop interpret a youth story? The characters in the work are based on the real stories of street dancers and young volunteers in Guangzhou, telling the story of the rebellious street dance teenager Ah Yu, the inferior girl Xiao Meng, and the optimistic and positive volunteer Tianhong who became acquainted with street dance, chased dreams in volunteer service, and joined hands to contribute to society.
The stage showcases Cantonese opera, Wing Chun, Chicken Gonglan, English song and dance, Cantonese morning tea and other symbols full of Cantonese flavor. Real life scenes such as volunteer service, the scene of the "epidemic" and urban life were vividly interpreted by the actors in the form of street dances such as lock dance, shock dance, and break dance. The local elements of grounding "ignited" the cheers of the audience.
Feng Shuangbai, chairman of the China Dancers Association and artistic director of "Our Life", said that this play innovatively presents the real life and true style of contemporary Chinese street dance and youth in the form of stage art.
"I hope to break through everyone's understanding that hip-hop is just a kind of self-amusement." Xia Guangxing, a national-level choreographer and artistic director of "Our Life", said that the biggest challenge facing the repertoire is how to turn "street dance" into a sharp tool for telling Chinese stories, to express the new era, new youth and new life.
Xia Rui, executive deputy director and secretary general of the Street Dance Committee of the China Dancers Association and general director of "Our Life", introduced that street dance has received more and more attention from the street to the theater, from "imported products" to art forms that integrate local characteristics. After watching the performance, Liu Jiang, director of the China Dancers Association and a national first-class choreographer, said that in the impression of many people, street dance is often associated with "showmanship", but "Our Life" deeply integrates different dance types with traditional culture and Lingnan culture from the action, dance section and character relationship. This breakthrough shows that street dance can tell the Chinese story that happens around us.
The drama brings together street dance masters from 15 provinces across the country: China's first world street dance champion Zhou Renxun (Ah Ya), "This! It is Han Yu, the overall champion of "Street Dance 1", and the dancers Liu Yaqian and Xi Jiaqi. There are also a number of hip-hop celebrities who have joined the camp, the oldest of the actors is 43 years old, and the youngest is only 10 years old.
"Many actors have fulfilled their stage dreams here." Zheng Feng, executive deputy director of the Guangdong Street Dance Alliance and deputy director of "Our Life", revealed that the actors who stood out in the sea selection were mainly in Guangdong Province, and there were also street dance lovers in Beijing, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi and other places, and some even shut down their business or quit their jobs in order to participate.
"Our Life" is produced by the Propaganda Department of the Guangzhou Municipal Party Committee of the Communist Party of China and the Guangzhou Radio and Television Station.
