Founded in 1964, the Dermatology Hospital of Southern Medical University (Guangdong Dermatology Hospital) has undergone several institutional reforms and has now developed into a university-affiliated hospital integrating dermatology and venereal disease diagnosis and treatment, scientific research, teaching and prevention. In recent years, the hospital has vigorously promoted the construction of a clinical research-oriented hospital, focusing on building a medical service model with dermatology as the leader, traditional Chinese medicine dermatology, dermatologic surgery and other disciplines cluster development, and outstanding advantages in specialty and special diseases; opened 20 specialized outpatient clinics for psoriasis, rare and hereditary skin diseases, established special treatment platforms such as psoriasis treatment center and allergy center, carried out new technologies and new projects such as hair transplantation and laser drug introduction treatment, and independently developed dozens of preparations for external skin use in the hospital.
Recently, Yang Bin, president of the hospital, pointed out in an interview with this reporter that the hospital will implement the concept of "integration, innovation, development, learning and service", with the goal of "expansion, quality improvement and efficiency", and in accordance with the requirements of the development of new quality productivity, it will work hard, dry quickly and tightly to climb the peak of dermatology.

Be refined, stronger, and bigger
Compared with general hospitals, the development path and discipline construction of specialized hospitals are different. In Yang Bin's view, the advantages of specialized hospitals are: it is easier to attract patients with specialized diseases to seek medical treatment, it is easier to gather specialist talents, it is easier to concentrate on investing human, financial, material and other resources, and it is easier to form a focus of publicity, so as to create a distinctive brand. However, at the same time, specialized hospitals are also facing general difficulties in their development, which is mainly manifested in the lack of support for disciplines. "Dermatologists can't just look at one skin and treat one skin. Yang Bin said that we must see the essence through the phenomenon, comprehensively analyze the symptoms, and find out the internal cause of the disease, so as to fully cure the patient. In her view, symptoms are often only the appearance of internal diseases, dermatologists should have a holistic concept, know how to see the essence through the phenomenon, and look for the internal causes of changes in the appearance of the skin, these diseases may be related to immune, metabolic, endocrine, and even tumor diseases, and if the cause is not found, there is no effective treatment.
However, at present, specialized hospitals often need to work together with general hospitals when treating difficult and critical diseases. Yang Bin said that dermatology hospitals need the support of departments such as internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, pediatrics and imaging, and should pay attention to a holistic and systematic view in the development process. To this end, the hospital has planned a three-level development path of "being refined, stronger and bigger". First of all, we should carry out the construction of refinement of specialized diseases and promote refined treatment. The hospital analyzes subspecialties and enhances the ability to treat specialized diseases by improving diagnosis and treatment technology, optimizing work processes, and improving service quality. Secondly, the hospital strengthens its specialist strength, carries out clinical and basic scientific research, applies innovative therapies, and establishes a superior brand. At present, the hospital has entered a new stage of discipline development, and has gradually cultivated and strengthened the capacity building of respiratory medicine, cardiovascular medicine, gastroenterology, oncology, endocrinology, allergy and other specialties by increasing investment, and developed imaging and pathology, and built an intensive care unit (ICU). Finally, by expanding capacity, improving quality and expanding volume, the hospital is exploring the construction of "one hospital and multiple districts", aiming to break through the bottleneck of development and seek strong support for high-quality development.
Strengthen advantages and promote the construction of specialties
In 2008, the hospital put forward the development concept of strengthening the construction of specialized diseases and began to implement it.
Adhering to the discipline development concept of "the hospital has famous departments, departments have specialized diseases, and people have specialties", the hospital regards the construction of special diseases as a powerful starting point for the high-quality development of the hospital, and promotes the dual improvement of specialty construction capacity and service quality through hierarchical and hierarchical cultivation, combined with target responsibility management and process evaluation mechanism.
Yang Bin believes that the development of specialties is inseparable from the guidance of disciplines, and discipline construction is the top priority of the current hospital development, the cornerstone of the hospital's brand, reputation and status, the basis for improving quality and efficiency, attracting talents, and strengthening management, improving quality and developing business. In this regard, on the one hand, the hospital promotes the construction of disciplines, selects the direction of specialty development, clarifies the specialty structure, supports the guarantee policy and assessment and incentive mechanism, drives the overall improvement of diagnosis and treatment ability and level with the development of specialties, and actively lays out the specialties in terms of technical characteristics, service capabilities, technological breakthroughs and innovations, and specialty influences. Keeping the overall situation in mind, we will continue to strengthen the construction of clinical specialties, improve the level of clinical research, focus on cutting-edge medical science and technology innovation research and achievement transformation, and strive to achieve the development of specialties to promote the improvement of hospital diagnosis and treatment capabilities and levels. In addition, the hospital has also strengthened the construction of specialized and specialized disease teams, equipped the personnel echelon of special disease groups, implemented dynamic management of special disease teams, carried out talent cultivation in multiple forms and dimensions, and implemented high-level medical talent training. After years of deep cultivation and exploration, the hospital's specialized medical service capacity has been significantly improved, and it has taken the lead in opening a laminar flow ward for dermatology in China, and has successively carried out new technologies and projects such as autologous tissue engineering epidermal transplantation for vitiligo surgery and microdermal implant technology for the treatment of chronic skin wounds, which has improved the level of treatment of difficult and severe skin diseases. In the past five years, 44 national natural projects have been approved, and 112 SCI articles have been published in the first district of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, including 54 articles with an impact factor of 10 or more, and in 2022, China's hospital science and technology (STEM) dermatology ranked 11th in the country and first in Guangdong Province for five consecutive years. For two consecutive years, it has been ranked first in the reputation ranking of dermatology in Fudan China Hospital in South China, and its academic level and brand influence have been continuously improved.
Yang Bin introduced that in the future, the hospital will continue to adhere to the development model of "maintaining advantages, strengthening characteristics, and highlighting key points", take brand specialties as the guide, strengthen the construction of special disease groups, and stimulate the innovation of clinical technology in various specialties.
Expand capacity and improve quality, strengthen specialties and refine comprehensiveness
Yang Bin introduced that the current factors restricting the development of the hospital include the shortage of space, the small number of staff, and the lack of ability to support disciplines, etc., and the hospital is working hard to solve these problems. Among them, the construction of "one hospital and multiple districts" is one of the solutions.
In 2020, the construction project of the Baiyun Campus of the hospital was officially signed, and the hospital's "14th Five-Year Plan" development plan to optimize the development layout and expand the capacity release action was officially launched. With 1,000 beds, Baiyun Hospital is planned to become a tertiary comprehensive hospital with dermatology and venereal disease diagnosis and treatment as the leader, including internal medicine, surgery, gynecology and pediatrics, and integrating medical treatment, teaching, scientific research and prevention. In 2022, the hospital established the Zhujiang New Town Medical Aesthetic Center in Tianhe District, with an outpatient area of more than 2,000 square meters. The hospital adheres to the concept of "medical treatment before beauty", promotes standardized treatment of medical cosmetology, establishes a standardized brand benchmark for medical cosmetology, and leads the scientific, healthy and sustainable development of the regional medical cosmetology industry. Yang Bin introduced that the hospital will actively respond to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area strategy in the future, and incorporate the construction of "one hospital and multiple districts" into the strategic layout.
In addition, the hospital cooperates with more than 70 member units to build a specialty alliance, organizes an annual meeting every year, carries out training such as a lecture hall for famous teachers of the specialty alliance, and establishes a consultation mechanism for difficult cases. At the same time, in response to the needs of the grassroots, the alliance trains dermatology medical personnel, establishes standardized outpatient clinics, and provides homogeneous services. As the affiliated unit of Guangdong Provincial Quality Control Center for STD Diagnosis and Treatment and Guangdong Provincial Quality Control Center for Psoriasis Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment Center, the hospital will evaluate the dermatology departments of medical institutions in the province and improve the standardization of medical services in the region as a whole.
Regarding the future development plan of the hospital, Yang Bin pointed out that first, we must adhere to and strengthen the party's overall leadership and lead the high-quality development of the hospital; Platform construction to speed up process reengineering, third, we must continue to focus on discipline construction, accelerate the deep integration of basic and clinical research, fourth, we must continue to focus on specialty capacity building, improve brand influence, fifth, we must continue to focus on the construction of talent team, accurately attract talents, cultivate young talents, and provide intellectual support for the high-quality development of the hospital, sixth, we must continue to focus on lean management and improve work efficiency, and seventh, we must accelerate the layout of "one hospital and multiple districts", and make every effort to promote the construction of Baiyun Hospital.
