20世纪的杰出大师之一,Giorgio de Chirico乔尔乔·德·基里科(1888-1978)。

His "metaphysical paintings" (paintings that represent the non-everyday world through fantastical landscapes and still lifes), which he began to create around 1910, have had a significant impact on many artists and international art movements.

In this exhibition, Chirico's approximately 70-year artistic career is divided into themes such as "Piazza d'Italia", "Metaphysical Interior", and "Models", and his works from his early to later years are comprehensively displayed.

This is an exhibition that traces the world of Kirico's creation, and it has not been a solo exhibition of this scale in Japan for 10 years.

As an illustrator and graphic designer representing Japan, Akira Uno (b. 1934) has been active in this field. In the 1960s, he popularized the terms "illustrator" and "illustrator", setting the trend of the times and being hailed as a legend, but he always maintained an attitude of constant evolution.

He has created a wide range of fields, including illustration, posters, picture books, books, animated films, paintings, and stage design, and has expanded since his debut in the early 1950s.

This exhibition will cover all works of Uno from his early days to his latest works, and is the largest exhibition to date. Exhibits include corporate advertisements from the 1950s, underground theater posters and picture books from the 1960s, children's books, and, more recently, paintings on haiku and shoujo.

Amazing Miniature Expressions: From Edo and Meiji Crafts to Contemporary Art

Art events | Information on exhibitions and events in Tokyo in May

As a port and residence center, Yokohama was a major producer of ceramics during the Meiji period, and it has won a high reputation for the exquisite craftsmanship and design represented by "Yokohama-yaki" that amazed Europeans and Americans.

In addition, it also produces export carved furniture in an eclectic style based on Western furniture, with carvings such as dragons, pine, bamboo, plums, and phoenixes. In recent years, Yokohama-ware is experiencing a revival, and there has been a resurgence of attention for precious carved furniture, which has almost disappeared in Japan.

Even as times change, along with excellent craftsmanship, works with distinct personalities and artistry continue to attract people. In modern times, the traditional realistic expression of the West has produced paintings and sculptures with realistic power. Today, we can also see some of the most striking attempts by modern artists to explore their own expressions in depth.

This exhibition will showcase the diverse expressions of about 100 works from a wide range of fields, including craft, painting, and modern art, based on the key words of fine expression from the Edo period to the Meiji period in Japan to the present.

Satoru Aoyama Embroidery Boy Forever

Art events | Information on exhibitions and events in Tokyo in May

"Does it ever exist?"

This sentence conveys the theme that Satoru Aoyama has explored in recent years, that is, the question of the various "vanishing things" that are about to disappear in society.

Satoru Aoyama is a contemporary artist from Meguro Ward. He created works using a completely different approach to embroidery making.

The replacement of embroidery as a handicraft by the industrial machine, the sewing machine, alludes to both labor and capitalism in contemporary society, as well as the question of the difference between mass-produced products and works of art.

In addition, Satoru Aoyama's work raises the question of the traditional division of roles between men and women, in which embroidery is seen as women's work. Satoru Aoyama's exhibition, subtitled "Embroidered Youth," alludes to the issue of gender and age discrimination.

Satoru Aoyama has always been sensitive to the ever-changing issues of the society we live in, and uses a sewing needle to satirize.

This exhibition will show Satoru Aoyama's entire history from his early work depicting his alma mater in Meguro Ward to his latest work.

Katsuro Yoshida Exhibition

Art events | Information on exhibitions and events in Tokyo in May

Katsuro Yoshida (1943-1999), who studied with Yoshishige Saito at Tama Art University, began experimenting with the combination of objects in 1969 and began to create works that naturally express their characteristics.

This style of creation, which came to be known as "Mono-ha", received international attention, and Yoshida was one of the first artists to experiment with it. Later, Yoshida gradually moved away from the "Mono-ha" style, and from the 1970s began experimenting with experimental methods such as transfer, and explored pictorial expression.

In the early 1980s, he created the abstract landscape and human body series Phantoms, and in the late 1980s, he began to create a series of works with organic images of powdered graphite rubbing his fingers, which attracted attention, but unfortunately he died at the age of 55.

This exhibition will be the first comprehensive review of Katsuro Yoshida's work. Works that have never been exhibited until now will be exhibited, as well as research-based materials, including production notes on work plans and concepts. The exhibition will trace the trajectory of Katsuro Yoshida's creative trajectory as he continued to seriously explore the path he should have chosen against the backdrop of the changing artistic trends of the same era.
