Obituary

Comrade Chen Junwu, an outstanding member of the Communist Party of China, the winner of the titles of "Model of the Times" and "The Most Beautiful Struggler", senior academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, master of Chinese engineering design, a famous oil refining engineering technical expert in mainland China, the founder of catalytic cracking engineering technology, an expert in modern coal chemical technology, an advisor to the Science and Technology Committee of China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, and an honorary director of the Technical Committee of Sinopec Luoyang Engineering Co., Ltd., passed away at 17:47 on May 1, 2024 in Luoyang at the age of 97.

Comrade Chen Junwu, Han nationality, born in Beijing on March 17, 1927, ancestral home in Changle County, Fujian Province, joined the Communist Party of China in 1956, graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering of the School of Engineering of Peking University in June 1948, and started working in December 1949. He has successively served as Deputy Director of the Process Office, Director of the Process Office, Deputy Chief Engineer, Chief Engineer, President, Company Manager, Director of the Technical Committee of Fushun Design Institute of the Ministry of Petroleum Industry and Sinopec Luoyang Engineering Co., Ltd., and Consultant of the Science and Technology Committee of China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation. In 1976, 1983 and 2002, he served as a member of the Fourth, Fifth and Ninth CPPCC of Henan Province, was elected as a deputy to the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 1992, and was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991. He has won the first prize of the National Technological Invention Award, the first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the Science and Technology Progress Award of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, and the Outstanding Contribution Award of Science and Technology of Henan Province.

Comrade Chen Junwu is the founder of catalytic cracking engineering technology in mainland China. In the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the mainland's petroleum refining industry had a very weak industrial foundation, and the domestic oil refining technology was backward. At the end of 1961, the state decided to be self-reliant and independently develop five new oil refining technologies, known as the "Five Golden Flowers". The 34-year-old Chen Junwu rose to the challenge and served as the chief designer of the mainland's first fluid catalytic cracking unit. On May 5, 1965, the first set of fluidized catalytic cracking unit in the mainland designed by Chen Junwu was successfully put into operation at Fushun Petroleum Plant No. 2, which drove the mainland's oil refining technology to leapfrog nearly 20 years in one fell swoop, approaching the world's advanced level at that time, and was known as the first "golden flower" of the new China's oil refining industry. Since then, Chen Junwu has continued to innovate and led the mainland's refining and chemical technology to catch up with the world's advanced level. In 1985, the 500,000 tons/year coaxial catalytic cracking technology of Lanzhou Oil Refinery designed by Chen Junwu won the first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, and in 1987, the Daqing atmospheric residue catalytic cracking technology developed by him as the leader of the research team won the first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award again. It is with the joint efforts of Chen Junwu and other generations that the mainland has become a veritable catalytic cracking power in the world's oil refining field.

Comrade Chen Junwu is a well-known expert in modern coal chemical technology in mainland China. In the 90s of the 20th century, Chen Junwu began to pay attention to the national energy strategy and wrote a monograph of more than 1.2 million words on "A Comprehensive Theory of Petroleum Substitution". As a consultant of an international consulting company and a well-known technical expert, he has participated in the review of feasibility studies and technical achievements appraisal of many major "coal-to-liquid" and "coal-to-chemical" projects in mainland China as the leader of the review team, actively providing advice for the modern coal chemical industry in mainland China, and effectively promoting the development of coal-to-liquid technology with independent intellectual property rights in mainland China. In the nineties of the last century, Academician Chen Junwu cooperated with the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to start the engineering scale-up and industrial test of coal-based methanol to olefins technology. In August 2010, under his guidance, the world's first and the world's largest DMTO industrial demonstration plant was built in Baotou City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, forming a core technology with independent intellectual property rights in the field of coal-to-olefins. The DMTO technology developed by Academician Chen Junwu and his team has successfully opened up the technological route of non-petroleum raw materials for olefin production, and promoted the rapid formation of a strategic new industry of methanol to olefins in the mainland. "Methanol to Low Carbon Olefins (DMTO) Technology" won the first prize of the 2014 National Technological Invention Award.

Comrade Chen Junwu is a scientist with strategic vision. In his old age, he has taken the responsibility and responsibility of a scientist and paid great attention to the research of greenhouse gas emissions and low-carbon economy. From 2010 to 2015, he published more than 10 articles and a 240,000-word monograph entitled "Research on China's Medium and Long-term Carbon Emission Reduction Strategic Goals", which put forward positive scientific suggestions for the formulation of national carbon emission policies, the adjustment of energy structure, the improvement of energy efficiency, and the sustainable development of the economy. The data on China's carbon emissions presented by Chen Junwu is in good agreement with the data announced by the state at the press conference after the 2014 APEC summit in Beijing, providing useful suggestions and detailed and reliable basis for the country.

Comrade Chen Junwu is a tireless mentor who is willing to serve as a ladder for others. In 1995, 2005 and 2015, he edited and published Catalytic Cracking Technology and Engineering, which systematically summarized the theory and industrial practice of catalytic cracking technology in oil refining in mainland China. From 1992 to 2000, with the strong support of the headquarters of China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation, he organized three advanced seminars on catalytic cracking, and personally taught the trainees, cultivating a group of high-level scientific research and engineering experts for China's petroleum and petrochemical industry.

Comrade Chen Junwu is an exemplary practitioner of the spirit of patriotic struggle and dedication. He pledged himself to the country, had no regrets, worked hard to contribute to the country and the industry, adhered to the values of "dedication is greater than taking", and was a useful person to the society. He is indifferent to fame and fortune, strict with himself, and has always been strict with himself in terms of housing and official treatment. He declined the treatment of an expert with a secretary and a special car, and insisted on walking to work for nearly 20 years. He donated 200,000 yuan of his teaching fees to reward outstanding young students, and silently funded poor college students until graduation.

Comrade Chen Junwu has devoted himself to China's petroleum and petrochemical industry for more than 70 years, always has a strong sense of family and country, always embodies a strong sense of responsibility, consciously integrates his personal ideals into the great cause of national development, adheres to the mission of "loving China, revitalizing petrochemical" and "cheering for a better life", is determined to innovate and work hard, and has made outstanding contributions to the development of the mainland's petroleum and petrochemical industry.

The farewell ceremony for Comrade Chen Junwu's body is scheduled to be held at 9 a.m. on May 7, 2024 (Tuesday) in Hall 9 of Luoyang Funeral Home.

Deeply mourn and deeply cherish the memory of Comrade Chen Junwu!
