Born in Shanghai in 1954, Zhan Renzuo loved painting since childhood, graduated from the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts in his early years, and studied at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. He studied under the famous flower and bird painter Mr. Qiao Mu, specializing in flower and bird painting, and was guided by Tang Yun, Xie Zhiliu, Fang Zengxian and other masters. He is not only a painter, he is also a professor of fine arts at Shanghai Jiaotong University, a scholar in an institution of higher learning, and teaching and educating people is his primary responsibility. He not only taught painting to college students at the university, but also taught the art of painting to art lovers across the country on China Education Television.
He has given 40 lectures on "Learning Flower and Bird Painting with Teacher Zhan" and 40 lectures on "Little Freehand Flowers and Birds" on China Education Television. He has published more than 20 books, textbooks, and art collections. In June 2011, he was appointed as a permanent academic advisor to the Royal Foundation of Arts. In September 2017, he was appointed as a distinguished professor at Japan Women's University of Fine Arts. In December 2021, he was hired by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government as a librarian of the Research Institute of Culture and History.
