In the Organ Transplantation Center of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University, Cai Jinzhen, the subject leader, led the team to successfully complete a number of liver transplants, including split liver transplantation, whole liver transplantation, emergency surgery, etc. In order to better save the patient, the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University and Jinan Qilu Hospital relayed their lives to complete the transmission of the donor liver in first aid, racing against time for timely surgery.
On the day before Labor Day, the Organ Transplant Center of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University successfully completed two liver transplants. A healthy donor liver was split into two parts, and two patients with cirrhosis were successfully operated on. According to Cai Jinzhen, the patient, Ms. Ye, is 59 years old this year and needs a liver transplant because of autoimmune cirrhosis with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The patient, Mr. Sun, is 53 years old and needs to have his liver replaced because he has a malignant liver tumor and hepatitis B cirrhosis. In the end, a healthy liver was transplanted to Ms. Ye for the left half of the liver and the right half of the liver was transplanted to Mr. Sun, and the operation lasted 10 hours and 11 hours, respectively.
In the morning of the same day, Cai Jinzhen's team successfully distributed a healthy 2,170-gram liver through the Chinese human organ allocation and sharing computer system. What is special is that this liver donor is an emergency donor obtained from Jinan, and the patient in Qingdao will prepare for surgery that afternoon. In order to complete this relay of life, the medical staff of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University and Qilu Hospital raced against time and planned to send the liver to Qingdao in the shortest possible time. "Time is urgent, the sooner the organ is obtained, the greater the chance of survival of the recipient, generally speaking, the activity of the liver source can be guaranteed within 12 hours, but the patient's condition is urgent, every minute is a race against death, and the liver source needs to be sent to the hospital for liver transplantation as soon as possible. Cai Jinzhen told reporters.

In order to send the liver to the destination as soon as possible, the medical staff of Qilu Hospital urgently contacted the local high-speed rail station, passed through the green channel, and took the bullet train to Qingdao at 12:11 to escort the liver to Qingdao. At 14:11, the high-speed rail arrived in Qingdao, and the doctors of Qilu Hospital escorted the liver with a special low-temperature box and handed it over to the medical staff of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University, and then, following the ambulance, the liver should arrive at the operating room at the fastest speed.
Cai Jinzhen, director of the Organ Transplantation Center of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University, told reporters that this healthy liver needs to be completely peeled off little by little, and the number of grams needed by the patient is calculated before transplantation. The patient, Mr. Tan, a native of Anhui Province, was admitted to the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University because of his impaired consciousness, and was diagnosed with chronic acute liver failure, hepatic encephalopathy, and hypoproteinemia. The patient had been diagnosed with hepatitis B for more than 30 years, and his condition was stable after antiviral therapy, and the patient stopped the drug on his own. Recently, the patient had recurrent hepatic encephalopathy and impaired consciousness, and the patient was transferred from the Department of Infectious Diseases to the Laoshan Liver Transplantation Department of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University for treatment of liver metastasis. "After being transferred to the department, we actively gave liver protection, choleretic, blood ammonia lowering and improved the preoperative evaluation of liver transplantation, and the preoperative CT examination of the patient showed liver cirrhosis, splenomegaly, portal hypertension and open collateral circulation, etc., and finally needed liver replacement to survive. Cai Jinzhen told reporters.
The operation began at 13:30 and lasted until the early morning of May 1, when the team completed the operation, and finally, the patient was implanted with 2,170 grams of liver, and the operation was successful and transferred to the intensive care unit.
During the May Day holiday, for Cai Jinzhen's team, it was still busy. During the holidays, they are always waiting for the results of the liver allocation, and as long as there is a healthy liver, they will perform the operation on the patients who are waiting for a liver transplant. Every day, Cai Jinzhen arranges for patient rounds, emergency surgeries, and routine surgeries. Since January this year, the department has completed 90 liver transplants, which is the leading one in the country.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Organ Transplantation Center of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University, which also coincides with the decade of vigorous development of organ transplantation in mainland China. In the past ten years, the Organ Transplantation Center of the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University has completed more than 1,350 liver transplants, more than 2,100 kidney transplants, nearly 100 pediatric liver transplants, more than 50 heart transplants, more than 30 lung transplants, and more than 40 pancreas transplants under the leadership of Professor Cai Jinzhen, the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University, leading the country.
