New Trends in the Situation in the Taiwan Strait: Subtle changes in the PLA's mission shift to peaceful reunification

Recently, many friends who are concerned about the situation in the Taiwan Strait may notice a subtle change: In some official documents on the mainland, the well-known expression of "peaceful reunification" seems to be becoming less and less common. Although this change is subtle, it is like a pebble thrown into the surface of the lake, stirring up layers of ripples, and people can't help but have more speculation and concern about the new trend of the situation in the Taiwan Strait.

Speaking of the situation in the Taiwan Strait, we cannot fail to mention a series of practices taken by the DPP since it came to power. Since Tsai Ing-wen became Taiwan's leader, her policies on cross-strait relations have been controversial. She not only restricted normal exchanges between the people on both sides of the strait, but also tried to inculcate the idea of "Taiwan independence" among the younger generation, and even revised textbooks in an attempt to separate Taiwan from China's history and culture. Such a move has undoubtedly intensified the antagonism between the two sides of the strait and made the already complicated cross-strait relations even more tense.

What is even more unacceptable is that the Tsai Ing-wen government has also suppressed the mainland's news media. Media such as Zhongtian News and TVBS News, which were originally voices on the island of Taiwan that could objectively report on the development of the mainland, were suppressed and blocked by Tsai Ing-wen. Under the pretext of "public opinion warfare", she suppressed these media, causing them to be unable to operate normally and even forced to close. This practice not only restricts the opportunities for the people of Taiwan to understand the mainland, but also further aggravates the information asymmetry and misunderstanding between the two sides of the strait.

Against this background, the mainland has gradually downplayed the expression of "peaceful reunification" in its official statements. This does not mean that the mainland will take immediate military action, but it does send a new signal to the outside world: the mainland's attitude is changing when dealing with the situation in the Taiwan Strait. Behind this change is a reassessment of the situation in the Taiwan Strait by the mainland side, and it is also a response to a series of measures taken by the DPP authorities.

Why, then, did the mainland adjust its Taiwan policy at this time? What is the deep meaning behind this?

First of all, from the perspective of the mainland, with the continuous increase of national strength, the strength of the PLA Navy and Air Force has also been significantly improved. Today, the PLA has enough strength and confidence to deal with all kinds of complex situations. Under such circumstances, the mainland's expectation for peaceful reunification may be lowered, because they already have sufficient strength and means to safeguard the unity and territorial integrity of the country.

Second, judging from the DPP authorities, their series of moves have brought cross-strait relations to a deadlock. They tried to promote the "Taiwan independence" process by restricting cross-strait exchanges and instilling the idea of "Taiwan independence," but this practice was not widely recognized and supported. On the contrary, more and more people in Taiwan have begun to realize the harmfulness of "Taiwan independence" and have called for strengthening cross-strait exchanges and cooperation. Under such circumstances, the mainland side may feel that it is becoming more and more difficult to achieve reunification through peaceful means, and therefore it is necessary to take more decisive and forceful measures to safeguard the unity and territorial integrity of the country.

Of course, we cannot ignore the impact of some external factors on the situation in the Taiwan Strait. In recent years, the United States and some other countries have frequently interfered in Taiwan Strait affairs in an attempt to undermine the peace and stability of cross-strait relations by supporting "Taiwan independence" forces and strengthening military cooperation with Taiwan. Such external interference has not only aggravated the tension in the Taiwan Strait, but also brought greater difficulties to peaceful reunification.

In the face of such a situation, the mainland side may believe that it is becoming more and more difficult to achieve reunification through peaceful means, and therefore it is necessary to take more resolute and forceful measures to safeguard the unity and territorial integrity of the country. This does not mean that the mainland will immediately take military action, but it does send a clear signal to the outside world: On the issue of safeguarding national unity and territorial integrity, the mainland will take all necessary measures to safeguard its own interests.

At the same time, we should also realize that peaceful reunification is the general trend of history and the aspiration of the people. The compatriots on both sides of the strait have the same roots, the same culture, and the same species, and we share the same cultural traditions and historical memories. Therefore, we should face the future with a peaceful, rational and inclusive attitude and jointly promote the peaceful development of cross-strait relations. Only in this way can we achieve true peaceful reunification and let the compatriots on both sides of the strait share the fruits of prosperity and peace.

In short, the new developments in the situation in the Taiwan Strait have aroused widespread concern and speculation. While we can't be sure of what the future holds, we should remain vigilant and calm and face the future with a peaceful, rational and inclusive attitude. Only in this way can we create more favorable conditions for the peaceful development of cross-strait relations.
