After Lu Yonggen became an academician, he did not forget his original intention of joining the party, lived a diligent and thrifty life, his family was surrounded by walls, and he was affectionately called "Academician of Buyi". When he was seriously ill, he saved himself and his wife a lifetime of money, and donated a total of 8.8 million.

"Academician Buyi" Lu Yonggen was born in Hong Kong in 1930. At that time, Hong Kong was under British administration, and his father worked as a senior staff member in a British-run law firm, and the Lo family lived in very good conditions. Even if there are many brothers in the family, the father's salary is more than enough to support them. As a child, Lu Yonggen grew up in a warm and harmonious family, and did not know the suffering of the world.
The peaceful life was shattered in 1941 when Hong Kong was captured by the Japanese. 11-year-old Lu Yonggen looked at the people who fled in a hurry and had no power to resist, and his heart couldn't help but feel a wave of sadness, in the face of the aggression of other countries, we didn't even have the power to fight back.
He secretly vowed in his heart that he would make China a strong and prosperous country.
After the situation in Hong Kong stabilized, his father wanted Lu Yonggen to receive a British-style education and develop steadily in Hong Kong. After all, under the circumstances at that time, having a Hong Kong hukou meant that his life safety was guaranteed, and Lu Yonggen could live a stable life under the protection of his father.
China is suffering hardships, and the broad masses of the people are living in dire straits, so how can Lu Yonggen, who has a strong patriotic heart, survive in the world?
Lu Yonggen gave up his father's arranged stable life and chose to study at Pui Kiu Middle School in Hong Kong. At school, he felt a strong sense of patriotism. When Lu Yonggen was 19 years old, he officially joined the Communist Party of China, obeyed the party's instructions, and went to Guangzhou to become a student at the Faculty of Agriculture of Lingnan University.
Going to the mainland means that Lu Yonggen has given up his identity as a Hong Kong person, and the Hong Kong hukou that countless people have coveted is just a shackle for him that prevents him from dedicating himself to the motherland.
When he came to Guangzhou, he felt more deeply the life of the people who did not have enough food and clothing. The young man's heart is full of pride and ambition, and he will do his best to save the people from fire and water.
Concentrate on serving the country
After graduating from the school in 1953, Lu Yonggen stayed on to teach and became a lecturer. After further study, he entered the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Beijing in 1962, followed his mentor Ding Ying, and embarked on the road of rice research.
Teachers and students jointly protect more than 7,000 rice seed resources and more than 900 wild rice seed resources, many of which are precious rice seeds that Lu Yonggen found over the mountains and mountains.
These precious rice seed resources provide rich samples for researchers to study rice seeds. Lu Yonggen is engaged in the genetic research of rice seeds, and proposed the concept of "specific affinity gene", which pointed out the direction for the research of rice seeds.
In 1980, Lu Yonggen studied in the United States. When he visited his mother, who was seriously ill, he persuaded him to settle down in the United States. At that time, the United States was stronger, had better scientific research equipment, and had a series of preferential policies for talents.
But Lu Yonggen scoffed at this, he always remembered that he was Chinese, that China was in a difficult and difficult period of development, and that China needed him.
In 1983, when he was the president of South China Agricultural University, he changed the school system and promoted five very good but inexperienced students as lecturers, breaking the traditional empiricist teaching team.
Lu Yonggen is well aware that the construction of the country cannot rely only on domestic scientific researchers, but should "embrace all rivers". He wrote letters to Chinese scholars abroad, and many scholars were inspired by him to give up the preferential treatment abroad and resolutely take root in the motherland.
It is true that no matter how advanced the laboratories abroad are, they are just working for others, so why not devote themselves to the construction of the motherland?
After being elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1993, Lu Yonggen, who is in his 60s, still works himself, and he is often seen working in the fields.
At the age of 70, he heard that a new wild rice seed had been found on a hilltop in Guangdong, and he insisted on going there himself, despite the objections of his students. The student had no choice but to hold his arm and help him climb the mountain.
When he got the new rice seeds, Lu Yonggen smiled like a simple child, and his physical discomfort was completely ignored by him.
He has a pure heart for the motherland and has always devoted himself to the front line of scientific research. When he was in his 80s, he could only study with a magnifying glass in his hand because of his eyesight. Lu Yonggen has devoted his life to the study of agricultural rice varieties, and has cultivated a total of 33 new varieties.
The frugal life of Academician Buyi
Lu Yonggen and his wife Xu Xuebin have always lived a frugal life, as academicians and presidents, he and his professor's wife are both high-income people, and the state will subsidize intellectuals, but they only need a house.
The facilities of the building are very simple, and the 80-year-old couple climbs up and down the 5th floor every day. The facilities of the room are also very simple, the room is full of old furniture, chairs tied with wire, old wardrobes, dim table lamps, old enamel bowls...... Probably the most valuable thing in the whole room is the whole wall of books.
Lu Yonggen and his wife do not socialize non-essentially, devote all their body and mind to scientific research, and insist on eating every meal at home. When they get older, they have leg problems and it is too much time for them to go home to eat, so they eat with their students in the school cafeteria.
They don't eat big fish and meat, just a simple vegetarian and meat plus two taels of rice. The principal of the school wanted to hire a nanny for the two to take care of their food and daily life, and also wanted to send a special car to facilitate their travel, but they all refused one by one and insisted on walking and riding bicycles every day.
At the beginning of 2017, Lu Yonggen was diagnosed with cancer and discussed with his wife to donate all their savings to the school. On the afternoon of March 14, 2017, Lu Yonggen, who was weakened by cancer, walked into the door of China Construction Bank tremblingly with the support of his wife Xu Xuebin.
He opened the black satchel he often carried and took out an envelope, which contained more than a dozen passbooks, which were all the savings of the couple who had worked for many years.
Every money in the passbook was saved by their frugality, and that afternoon, the Education Development Foundation of South China Agricultural University received more than 30 transfers, totaling 8.8 million yuan.
Lu Yonggen's health deteriorated and he had to be treated in the hospital. In 2018, he won the "Moving China 2017 Person of the Year", because of physical reasons, he was unable to attend the scene in person, and the program team made a special trip to the ward to present him with an award.
