Smart and poetic fine brush paintings, under his pen, flowers, birds, grasses and insects leap on the paper, bright and stylish, delicate but not dull. Yu Zhonglin, who is known as the grandmaster of Taiwan's generation, is from Guanxian County, Shandong. Born in a time of turmoil and growing up in the military, his love for painting was born in his nature and he never gave up even in the midst of displacement.
He has devoted more than 30 years of enthusiasm to Gongbi painting, specializing in flowers and birds, vegetables, fruits, grasses and insects and other subjects are vividly displayed in his brushwork. His works have been praised as "glamorous but not vulgar, delicate but not rigid", which is undoubtedly a high praise for his artistic achievements.
Yu Zhonglin (1925-1985) was a native of Guanxian County, Shandong Province, and a famous painter in Taiwan. His paintings such as "Yu Zhonglin's Painting Collection", "Introduction to Feather Painting", "Yu Zhonglin's Flower and Bird Album" and "Fan Yu Zhonglin's Flower and Bird Sketches" show his profound artistic attainments.
The misfortune of his childhood made Yu Zhonglin encounter the beginning of the war against Japan at the age of thirteen. He stopped his studies after reaching secondary school and threw himself into the tide of the war of resistance. In 1949, he moved to Taiwan with the Nationalist Government and served in the Ministry of National Defense. In addition to his official duties, he picked up the brush again and began his painting career in earnest. He first audited at the art department of the National Normal University, at a time when the fashion in the art world was more focused on ink and wash freehand, and color ink painting was declining. Under the guidance of the famous Jin Qinbo, he strengthened the foundation of gongbi. And with Sun Jiaqin and Hu Nianzu, he jointly founded the "Lishui Jingshe".
He was a man of great wit and humor, as well as a gifted painter. He can paint and paint with his left and right hands at the same time, and he can sit all day long. After continuous "painstaking painting", his works have finally been recognized, and he has held three art exhibitions, four solo exhibitions, and many invitational exhibitions at home and abroad. In the 60s, he was invited to Japan to host an exhibition of modern Chinese painters, and later was invited by the University of Hawaii to teach painting and hold an exhibition. He has received many awards, including the Golden Goblet Award of the Chinese Painting Society in '64 and the 5th Zhongxing Literature and Art Award.
In the modern society that pays attention to efficiency, the complexity and labor of gongbi flowers and feathers are gradually declining. However, in Yu Zhonglin's work, we see the simplicity of color and content, and he is good at using contrasting techniques to bring out the appearance of flowers against a hazy background. His works have the exquisite and elegant decorative effect of traditional gongbi painting, and at the same time incorporate the technique of ink rendering, so that the picture presents a multi-layered rich character. His works have a unique position in the Taiwanese art world, and are known as "glamorous but not vulgar, delicate but not rigid".
He also paints freehand boneless flowers and birds, showing another different kind of taste. He believes that the most important thing in painting is "adaptability", and he deeply understands that painting is a spiritual thing, and the higher the artist's artistic conception, the higher the level of the work. He has a stamp, "neither ancient nor modern, but with new ideas", which reflects his creative attitude: he unintentionally reveals a bit of self-acceptance, advocating that we should seek change from Chinese painting itself, innovate from tradition, and seek new artistic conception in Chinese painting.
