1. Foreword: Mechanical Revolution Jiaolong 16S equipped with YMTC PC411 512GB SSD

Not long ago, we tested a certain brand of notebook, and the PCIe 4.0 SSD on it easily exceeded 70 degrees Celsius when running under high load, resulting in a performance drop of about 20%.

For laptops, because the SSD cannot be fitted with heavy thermal armor like a desktop computer, it is easy to get out of control when carrying a high-performance PCIe 4.0 SSD.

However, the mechanical revolution Jiaolong 16S notebook we got recently is a bit unconventional, it is equipped with YMTC PC411 512 GB PCIe 4.0 SSD, without any heatsink installed, but the temperature is lower than many PCIe 4.0 SSDs equipped with heatsinks.

YMTC PC411 512GB SSD Measurement: Flagship Read and Write Performance Temperature Performance Against the Sky

Most of the flash memory I/O ports of mainstream PCIe 4.0 SSDs have a speed of 1600MT/s, and an eight-channel master controller is required to achieve a read and write speed of more than 7GB/s.

For the main controller, the higher the number of channels, the higher the power consumption under high load, and the higher the temperature.

The YMTC PC411 series is equipped with NAND flash memory based on the Xtacking® 3.0 architecture, with an I/O speed of up to 2400MT/s, which is more than 50% faster than similar products on the market, and only needs four lanes to run the maximum bandwidth of PCIe 4.0 x4.

Because of this, this SSD consumes extremely little power and runs stably without the need for a heatsink, making it ideal for laptops.

Let's take the notebook apart and take a look:

The YMTC PC411 512GB SSD scored 2288 points in the benchmark for fast system disks, with a storage bandwidth of 279MB/s and an average access time of 56 microseconds.

3. Temperature and sleep test: The maximum temperature of high-load read/write is only 53 degrees

1. Temperature test

Unlike desktops, laptops don't have enough space to install heatsinks for SSDs, such as the Yangtze River Storage PC411 512GB carried by the Mechanical Revolution Jiaolong 16S does not cover any heatsinks.

Let's test the CrystalDiskMark 64GB to see how this SSD performs.

YMTC PC411 512GB SSD Measurement: Flagship Read and Write Performance Temperature Performance Against the Sky

In standby mode, the PC411 512GB temperature is around 32 degrees. In the high-load read and write state, the maximum temperature is only 53 degrees.

This is a surprising temperature performance, as most PCIe 4.0 SSDs can easily exceed 53 degrees under high loads, even with heatsinks attached.

Next, we will also do a temperature test on another Yangtze River storage PC300 512GB SSD in the notebook.

In standby mode, the temperature of the PC300 512GB is 35 degrees. Under high load, the maximum temperature is 55 degrees, which is 2 degrees higher than that of the PC411 512GB.

2. 1000 dormant wake-up tests

Normal sleep and wake-up are the basic working requirements of SSDs, and long-term and high-frequency forced sleep and wake-up of SSDs with poor compatibility often produce sleep failures.

Below, we conduct a high-intensity sleep wake-up test on the Mechanical Revolution Jiaolong 16S to see if it can be stable.

Use the built-in PWRTEST command-line tool of the Windows system, sleep for 30 seconds each time, and then forcibly wake up, a total of 1000 sleep wake-ups, all completed normally, without any errors.

This shows that YMTC PC411 512GB SSD can fully meet the needs of consumer users in terms of compatibility.

6. Summary: Cost-effective PCIe 4.0 SSD for OEMs

As Samsung, SK hynix, Micron and other original manufacturers began to reduce production and increase prices, more and more PC manufacturers are now starting to use YMTC SSD products.

YMTC PC411 series SSD is a high-performance, low-power PCIe 4.0 SSD product specially launched for the OEM market, which has passed the rigorous verification of PC manufacturers.

Judging from the test results, this SSD can reach a maximum read speed of 6920MB/s sequential read and 5692MB/s sequential write speed, which is also the performance of a high-end PCIe 4.0 SSD.

Of course, if you change to the 1TB/2TB model, the read speed should easily exceed 7000MB/s.

Of course, when it comes to SSDs, temperature is crucial, and high temperatures will not only reduce performance, but long-term use will also seriously affect the lifespan of the SSD.

In this regard, the performance of the Yangtze Storage PC411 512GB SSD is excellent.

We ran a high-load read and write test, and the maximum temperature of this SSD was only 53 degrees, which is the result of testing without a heatsink installed.

In contrast, not to mention PCIe 4.0 SSDs, many PCIe 3.0 SSDs are far more than 53 degrees Celsius when they are not equipped with heat sinks.

In addition, the PC411 SSD has also changed the history of poor random performance of DRAM caching schemes in the past.

It uses HMB technology, and the 4K random read speed can reach 70MB/s, which is a spike for all cache-free products, which is not far behind high-end PCIe 4.0 SSDs with DRAM cache.

By saving DRAM cache, PC411 SSDs can further reduce costs without sacrificing high performance, making them ideal for high-volume OEM markets.
