A new project to build a blueprint for building decarbonization

As part of a new EU-funded project, six buildings in different European countries and climates will be electrified and retrofitted with heat pumps. This is to build a blueprint for the decarbonization of buildings.

The META-BUILD project, funded by the EU Horizon programme, will equip buildings in Austria, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy and Spain with heat pumps, photovoltaic thermal (PVT) systems and secondary batteries. The project will use the latest technology to optimize efficiency: a 3D model of the building will be generated and monitored by artificial intelligence to track performance.

Once validated, the model will be replicated in seven additional pilot projects in Bulgaria, France, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Poland and Spain. The aim is to ensure the replicability of solutions and accelerate the adoption of these technologies in the broader market.

Blueprints and policy recommendations are then developed to translate the results of the project into actionable policies that effectively contribute to the decarbonization of the construction sector.

META-BUILD项目经理Alexios Lekidis评论道:

"Decarbonization is a global initiative that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, mitigate climate change, and transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy. As part of the European Green Deal, the European Commission has developed a strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and reduce emissions by at least 55% by 2030. A key part of the strategy has to do with buildings, as a third of the reduced demand comes from them. As a pillar project of the European Commission's strategy, META-BUILD aims to demonstrate specific technologies and solutions such as heat pumps, PVTs, secondary batteries, etc., as well as the digitalization and intellectualization of buildings in several pilot projects in 10 European countries through smart energy management systems. "

The META-BUILD project held a kick-off meeting in Athens, Greece on January 30-31 and will last for four years.

About the Consortium:

The consortium is made up of 39 partners from 13 European countries with expertise in renewable energy technologies, from product manufacturing to the design of heat pumps, photovoltaic thermal (PVT) systems and secondary batteries. With ICCS as the project coordinator, the consortium draws on its experience, including IDM, INNOVA as a manufacturer of HP, CER and HEPT as a developer and provider of other technologies, and KLIMA as a leading engineering company.

AS TECHNOLOGY PROVIDERS, EDF, ZENITH, VEOLIA, AS WELL AS HOLISTIC, BLUEPRINT, ED, INETUM, CARTIF, AND EUROC WILL DEVELOP TECHNICAL SERVICES AND SOLUTIONS TO OPTIMIZE ENERGY MANAGEMENT (SUPPLY AND DEMAND), RENEWABLE ENERGY INTEGRATION, COMFORT, AND BUILDING ENERGY PERFORMANCE.

UNIZAG, TUD, and TECNALIA will lead the pilot technology innovations. A COST-BENEFIT ANALYSIS WILL BE CONDUCTED BY ARTELYS. RAP will explore the regulatory aspects and will work with EHPA for effective communication and dissemination. The coalition is ready to turn the vision of decarbonized and sustainable buildings into reality!

More details about the project:

META-BUILD embodies the vision of "transforming buildings towards a decarbonized and sustainable energy system". The project is funded by Horizon Europe under the number HORIZON-CL5-2023-D4-01 (GA 101138373) with a budget of €15,541,423.75 and a four-year schedule. META-BUILD aims to contribute to thermal demand and revolutionize the landscape by adopting a holistic approach and providing a blueprint for building decarbonization.

Specifically, META-BUILD will pioneer a cost-effective solution validated at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6-8 by integrating heat pumps (HP) with renewable energy sources (RES) and storage systems, including secondary batteries. The project will utilize cutting-edge technology to optimize efficiency by generating a 3D model of the building, which will be monitored by artificial intelligence to track performance.

Our focus covers six different construction projects, from the renovation of residential buildings in Austria and Croatia (connected to the local district heating network) to the revitalization of historic office buildings in France. In Greece, a new single-family home will showcase cutting-edge technology, while Italy will witness a complete renovation of a multi-family residential building. At the same time, Spain will host the new expansion of TECNALIA's headquarters.

Strategically identified in different countries and climate zones, the six frontrunner buildings will be retrofitted and electrified using state-of-the-art technology. The initiative aims to address different challenges and support the transition to a sustainable energy system.

Once successfully validated, these validated solutions will be replicated in seven additional pilot projects in Bulgaria, France, Germany, Greece, Latvia, Poland and Spain. This strategic expansion not only ensures the future replicability of the solution, but also accelerates the adoption of these technologies in the broader market.

META-BUILD is expected to play a key role in shaping the future landscape of sustainable and energy-efficient building practices across Europe.
