Lenovo Legion 170W GaN Charger Teardown
After reading the appearance and test of Lenovo's gallium nitride charger, let's disassemble it and take a look at the internal scheme and materials.
First, pry open the housing along the seam of the housing, and the fixing pins are welded by wires.
The internal PCBA module is extracted and the overall copper sheet is covered for heat dissipation.
The length of the PCBA module is about 67.4mm measured by vernier calipers.
The width of the PCBA module is about 64.9mm.
The thickness of the PCBA module is about 26.2mm.
The heat sink on the front and back of the PCBA module is connected by soldering.
Remove the heat sink wrapped around the PCBA module, glue the heating components such as the transformer to strengthen heat dissipation, and provide a thermal pad on the back of the corresponding PCB.
Mylar sheets are used to insulate the heat sink and the thermal pad.
The front of the PCBA module is at a glance, and the filter board is welded in the lower left corner, and the safety X2 capacitor and common mode inductor are welded on the board. The fuse and common-mode inductor are welded underneath. The right side of the rectifier bridge is welded, and a heat sink is provided on the rectifier bridge. The lower right corner is the PFC boost inductor, and the upper corner is the high-voltage filter capacitor. Through observation, Lenovo's 170W GaN charger is designed with PFC+AHB switching power supply architecture, PFC for power factor correction, AHB switching power supply for wide voltage output, and finally the protocol chip outputs the voltage through the optocoupler feedback control interface, and the internal use of nanoGaN switch and STMicroelectronics GaN half-bridge chip. The rectifier bridge is from Yangjie Technology, model GBU810, and the specification is 8A 1000V.
The film filter capacitors from KNSCHA are MPB series shell film capacitors with a specification of 1μF 450V.
The filter inductor is magnetically wrapped.
The input PFC controller adopts Silergy Corp. SY5072B, silkscreen d9, runs in critical mode, operates with constant on-time, and the built-in boost converter adopts quasi-resonant switch, and the valley is turned on to obtain high efficiency and optimize EMI performance.
The PFC switch is from Navitas, model number NV6136C, which is a highly integrated GaN power IC with a built-in driver and a high-precision lossless current sensing circuit that eliminates the loss of the sampling resistor. NV6136C built-in 170mΩ on-resistance, 700V GaN switch with 2MHz switching frequency, 6*8mm QFN package, saving area.

The AHB controller from Jewalt, model number JW1556B, is an asymmetrical half-bridge flyback controller in a QFN 4x4-20 package for off-line flyback converter applications. The input voltage range is 2.5-38V, the maximum operating frequency is 1.5MHz, and it supports 65-300W fast charging applications. JW1556B model optimized for peak output power for laptop use, supporting 1-2 times the peak power, suitable for laptop adapter use.
The Jewalt JW1556B operates in ZVS mode under heavy loads and supports Adaptive ZVS switches to optimize efficiency. It works in DCM mode under light load, and can provide two-way output control of main power switch and auxiliary switch, and supports functions such as high-voltage start-up, X-capacitor discharge, burst mode control, and adjustable line compensation.
The filter capacitor that supplies power to the main control chip comes from Aihua, and the specification is 50V100μF.
The half-bridge GaN device from STMicroelectronics, model number MASTERGAN4, integrates two GaN switches with a withstand voltage of 650V and a conduction resistance of 225mΩ, which are connected to the half-bridge, and the driver is integrated into the chip, which can be controlled by input logic signals, and is easy to use. It is available in a 9*9mm QFN package for half-bridge resonant switching power supply applications.
The resonant capacitance specification is 0.47μF 450V.
The transformer is welded on the side of the PCBA module, and the output filter capacitor board is welded on the left side.

Six filter capacitors are welded to the small board, and the filter capacitors are from Emerald, and the specification is 680μF25V.

The protocol chip comes from Hynetek. Model HUSB362, it is a high-performance PD protocol chip that supports PD3.1 EPR and integrates 32-bit RISC-V MCU, with 32 KB MTP memory, and supports multiple PDOs with programmable voltage and current, such as PPS PDO, EPR PDO, all of which are fully compliant with the USB PD 3.1 V1.7 specification. HUSB362 has passed the USB-IF Association's PD3.1 compliance test with an EPR TID of 9692.
The VBUS switch is from Fuding Advanced, model AP3NR68CDT, NMOS, withstand voltage 30V, conduction resistance 0.68mΩ, and adopts PDFN5*6 package.
The USB-C receptacle is soldered to a small vertical board, and the corresponding data cable is equipped with a TVS diode for electrostatic protection.

The synchronous rectification adopts the Jewalt JW7726BL synchronous rectification controller with two Toshiba TPH4R50ANH1 synchronous rectifier tubes, and the protocol chip adopts Hynetek HUSB362. The charger adopts emerald high-voltage electrolytic capacitor and solid-state capacitor filtering inside, and the PCB small board is vertically soldered inside, which has a compact structure and makes full use of space.
