When reviewing and preparing for the exam, whether you are also thinking about your future major choice, before choosing a major, you must first understand these professional knowledge.

01 Professional Catalogue "Catalogue of Undergraduate Majors in Ordinary Colleges and Universities" (referred to as the Catalogue of Majors) stipulates the classification and name of the majors in college admissions, which is an important basis for colleges and universities to set up and adjust majors, implement talent training, arrange enrollment, confer degrees and guide employment, and is also an important reference for candidates and parents to understand the major settings and fill in the voluntary application. The latest major catalogue is based on the Catalogue of Undergraduate Majors in Ordinary Colleges and Universities (2012) of the Ministry of Education, which has been approved and added in recent years, and is formed in April 2023.

The professional catalog is divided into three levels: discipline, professional and professional. That is to say, there are several professional categories under a discipline category, and several majors under a professional category.

Level 1: Discipline categories

A discipline category is a classification of disciplines. The disciplines in mainland China are the basic basis for the state to carry out the examination and management of degree authorization, and for degree-awarding units to carry out the work of degree awarding and personnel training.

The disciplines are generally divided into 12 categories: philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and art, as well as newly added interdisciplinary disciplines and separate military disciplines.

Level 2: Professional

Majors can be understood as categories that are decomposed according to the different knowledge focuses under the same knowledge system, and there are 93 undergraduate majors.

For example, the learning content of civil engineering majors revolves around the planning, construction and maintenance of civil engineering, and the professional courses also have certain commonalities.

Level 3: Professional

Majors can be understood as academic categories set up by colleges and universities to cultivate all kinds of talents according to the needs of social division of labor. There are 792 undergraduate majors listed in the professional catalog, which are divided into basic majors, special majors and state-controlled distribution majors.

Basic majors generally refer to majors with relatively mature disciplinary foundations, relatively stable social needs, relatively large number of distributions, and good inheritance.

Ad hoc majors are majors set up to meet the special needs of economic and social development, and are indicated by adding "T" after the major code. Majors added to the catalogue in 2012 and later are listed as ad hoc majors.

The state-controlled distribution major is the national security, special industry and other majors involved in the professional catalog, which are controlled by the state, and the "K" is added after the professional code.

02 Majors & Degrees

Most of the bachelor's degrees awarded to students upon graduation are consistent with the discipline to which they are studying. However, there are some majors that have special circumstances in which the degree awarded is different from the type of discipline. When learning about a major, understanding the bachelor's degree awarded by the major is also an important part of our information gathering. It is also a reference for students who are willing to further their studies.

Situation 1: Some majors award bachelor's degrees in other disciplines

For example, some pharmacy, traditional Chinese medicine, medical technology, and nursing related majors under the medical discipline category are marked with "awarding a bachelor of science degree".

Scenario 2: Some majors may be awarded a degree in two (or more) disciplines with a bachelor's degree

The specific type of degree awarded depends on the characteristics of the university you are studying.

For example, a bachelor's degree in agronomy or engineering can be awarded for facility agricultural science and engineering.

Hainan University: Bachelor's degree in engineering is awarded to this major, and engineering courses such as greenhouse architecture and structural design are set up to cultivate interdisciplinary talents of industry and agriculture.

Nanjing Agricultural University: This major awards a bachelor's degree in agronomy, and its training method has a strong agronomy atmosphere, and students mainly learn about facility crop cultivation.

Situation 3: Cross-training, double degree degree certificate

Degree certificates awarded in interdisciplinary majors are different from those awarded in a single major

For example, the Law-Journalism Experimental Class of Chinese Renmin University belongs to the law school, and after graduation, two bachelor's degrees in literature and law are awarded.

The degree certificates awarded by the joint program are different from those of the single program

For example, the English of Beijing University of Foreign Chinese (Joint Training in Finance of Central University of Finance and Economics) is a joint training program of the school and the Central University of Finance and Economics, and the bachelor's degree certificate and the bachelor's degree of arts are awarded by Beijing Foreign Chinese University.

There are two types of double bachelor's degree graduation certificates: "indicated" and "awarded separately".

For example, in the dual bachelor's degree program of Economics-Mathematics and Applied Mathematics of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the two degrees (economics and applied mathematics) awarded are indicated in the same bachelor's degree certificate.

Degree certificates for minor majors can be awarded separately

For example, the University of International Business and Economics Business English (Intercultural Communication) Experimental Class awarded a Bachelor of Arts (Business English) + French/Spanish Minor Professional Certificate.
