On the evening of April 25, aerial photography of Baietan's Dawan Art Center.

The Baietan Dawan Art Center, which consists of the Guangdong Museum of Art, the Guangdong Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum and the Guangdong Literature Museum, will be open to the public free of charge from May 1.

Baietan Dawan Art Center is a major provincial cultural landmark project integrating Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangdong Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum and Guangdong Literature Museum, and has been included in the "Planning Outline for Building a Strong Cultural Province in Guangdong Province (2011-2020)", "Outline of the 13th Five-Year Plan for the National Economic and Social Development of Guangdong Province", "13th Five-Year Plan for the Development of Cultural Undertakings in Guangdong Province" and other provincial and municipal documents.

The art center was led by He Jingtang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and co-designed by the Architectural Design Institute of South China University of Technology and the Guangdong Provincial Architectural Design Institute.

The relevant person in charge of the academician team of He Jingtang of the Architectural Design and Research Institute of South China University of Technology told the reporter that the design is based on the concept of "cultural giant wheel, time arcade, freehand goose pond, and Yunshan art scene".

The Art Center is positioned as a major landmark public cultural facility with Guangdong characteristics and international standards, an "internationally renowned, Asian-class, and domestically leading" modern cultural exhibition group, and a "landmark of Lingnan culture, a destination for public leisure, and a meeting room for exchanges in the Bay Area", and an important platform to showcase the achievements of Lingnan culture, promote the construction of the humanistic Bay Area, and promote exchanges and mutual learning between Chinese and foreign civilizations.

The project is located at the confluence of the three rivers on the bank of Baietan, Liwan District, Guangzhou, on the land of the Pearl River in the core area of Baietan's Industrial and Financial Service Innovation Zone, with a 560-meter-long riverside landscape surface.

Modeling: It is like a cultural giant ship docked by the river

The design adopts modern architectural language abstract freehand to express the design concept of cultural giant wheel and goose pond flying rainbow.

Due to the control of the riverside setback line and height line, the main building faces the Pearl River to the south, forming a three-level skyline of 30 meters, 50 meters and 80 meters, and at the same time, it gradually rises from the east and west sides to the center to form a cascading shape, echoing the height control line of the Pearl River. It presents a horizontal long axis building shape of nearly 360 meters, like a cultural giant ship docked by the river. The urban interface towards Etan Road is complete and unified, forming a giant flying arch in the center, which is an urban overhead public square with a width of 60 meters and a height of 10 meters, which has become an open place for citizens' daily activities and has been connected to the landscape belt on the bank of the Pearl River.

The façade is made of white ice cracked glazed ceramic panels and glazed glass curtain walls, inheriting the Chinese ceramic culture from the "Belt and Road" to the world.

Landscape: Daily citizens can watch the three rivers and six banks

With water as the landscape design language, it supports the shape of the main building ship, and sets off the main body with the ground pavement and greening that combines curves and straights, forming multiple landscape nodes such as the square water scenic area, the sunken leisure area, the waterfront landscape belt, and the hydrophilic platform.

The waterfront shoreline is set up with a waterfront plank road and activity platform to extend the square to the Pearl River, which is an important viewpoint for viewing the buildings from the Pearl River shoreline, and it is also a place for citizens to experience the new vitality of the old city. The creation of the "Baietan Grand Stage" on the water-friendly platform can enhance the cultural atmosphere of the art center, become a characteristic stage to display the literary and artistic achievements of the Greater Bay Area, and serve as an important viewing point for citizens to watch the cityscape of the three rivers and six banks of Baietan, and is the focus of stimulating the all-weather urban vitality of the art center.

The art center will be an important urban node along the Pearl River, and the building façade lights will be lit up on the south bank of Baietan, and the light show on holidays will be combined with lighting effects to create a bright spot in the city, which will comprehensively enhance the nighttime vitality of Baietan.

Function: Three museums of fine arts and intangible cultural heritage literature are integrated

The art center integrates the Guangdong Museum of Art, the Guangdong Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum, and the Guangdong Literature Museum, which are independent in function and form a unified whole in image. In the design, the three museums form their own independent tower volumes in the upper part, and the lower part forms an overall building base through the overall landscape, Feihong Corridor Bridge, shared art hall, underground commercial space and other shared functional bodies, and at the same time, the three museums are independent in terms of entrances and exits and flow line organization, and the three museums are interconnected in these shared areas.

Interview

Academician He Jingtang analyzes the design concept of the art center:

The biggest feature is to show the "new vitality of the old town"

Reporter: Please share your philosophy on design.

He Jingtang: First of all, the biggest feature of Baietan's Dawan Art Center is that it shows the spirit of "new vitality of the old city" and extends the cultural genes of the old city. The creation of modern style buildings here is the requirement of the times and the manifestation of the prosperity of our business. This means that Guangdong should not only be built into a major economic province, but also a strong cultural province, which is an important initiative for Lingnan culture to go to the Greater Bay Area, to the world, and to the cultural highland.

Second, Baietan's Greater Bay Area Art Center also attaches great importance to the harmony and harmony with the surrounding environment and climate, maintains the natural environment of clear water and green shores, and highlights the spiritual outlook of the humanistic Bay Area. As a waterfront building, our overall building volume is very large, in order to ensure the communication and integration of the city and the river, we made a giant covered bridge in the middle, organically combining the three venues, the whole covered bridge also implies the changes in the cultural characteristics of Lingnan culture over the past thousand years, and the venue means that Lingnan culture has set sail as a cultural giant ship and promoted to the world.

Thirdly, Baietan Dawan Art Center is not only an exhibition venue, but also a "city living room" for our citizens' daily activities. In terms of space design, we moved a road between the building and the Pearl River to the back, so that the building and the Pearl River could be integrated, and at the same time, a sunken plaza and a stage were designed here to ensure the activity space of citizens. We have also combined the surrounding landscape to transform the wharf into a multi-layered, high-level three-dimensional viewing and exchange space, whether it is closed or opened, it will not affect the leisure activities of the public: people can take a boat from the sea to see the Baietan-Dawan Art Center, look up at the building from the green plaza below, or look out at the Pearl River from the building...... From different levels, they are all landscapes and artistic conceptions.

In addition, we also pay great attention to the lighting at night, and when the venue is lit up, it shows a cultural giant ship gradually setting sail, representing the continuous development of our Lingnan culture.

Reporter: The façade of this building is actually like an artistic word "art", how can you integrate such an artistic word "art" into the façade of our building?

He Jingtang: Architecture should pay attention to artistry and practicality. In terms of artistic treatment, this kind of large-scale cultural building must be atmospheric and open, and the height and height are the specific art brought by the environment and climate of Lingnan, combined with the waterfront environment, the three venues are of different sizes and locations, and the overall look is like a cultural giant ship sailing. Art should also be combined with its practical function, and a good work is to be people-centered, taking into account people's needs everywhere: some need daylight, some need to be closed, etc. We also want the building to look good from the water, from the land, and from the air.

Reporter: What are the design features of the art museum, the literature museum, and the intangible cultural heritage museum?

He Jingtang: In my years of urban construction work, I have formed an architectural design concept called "Two Views and Three Properties", which is also applicable to this project. The "two views" are the overall view of architecture in space and the concept of sustainable development in time, and the "three characteristics" refer to the fact that architecture should meet the regional, cultural and contemporary characteristics at the same time. This museum highlights the characteristics of regional culture, environment, climate and waterfront, and it can be regarded as a good answer sheet for Guangzhou.

The creative design of each museum needs to determine its decoration style according to their respective functions. For example, in an art museum, the display of works needs to be relatively simple and atmospheric, so that the internal space can circulate enough, and the overall light-colored wall is used to highlight the artworks; for example, the intangible cultural heritage museum needs more decorative and traditional things of intangible cultural heritage...... However, the most important point to pay attention to is its fluidity, and a major feature of Lingnan culture is that it pays more attention to comfort, more stretched, accommodating, and innovative.
