On April 25, Beijing time, Melvin Ajinca, a 6-7 (2.01m) tall winger from France, told ESPN that Akinka announced his participation in the 2024 NBA draft after spending a season at LNB Pro A's Saint-Quentin club.

Akinka, a relative of seven-year NBA veteran Alexis Ajinca, who averaged 10.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game this season while shooting 35.1 percent from three-point range, recently returned from a sternal injury to play his best game of the season, scoring 19 points and nine rebounds.

Considered a potential first-round pick this year, he was paired with two top-five favourites, Zaccharie Risacher and Alex Sarr, at last year's U19 Men's Basketball World Cup, and performed well, averaging 19.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 27.6 minutes per game, and was named to the tournament's second team to help France eventually win a silver medal.
