How often should blood sugar be measured?

author:Friends of Diabetes

Do you know how often diabetics measure their blood sugar, which can monitor their blood sugar levels without affecting their quality of life?

According to the diet and medication, the frequency of blood glucose monitoring for different diabetic patients is very different!

1

Sugar friends who don't take injections or medicines

Blood glucose target: 1~2 times a week (fasting and 2 hours after meals)

Blood glucose does not meet the target: 2~4 times a week (fasting and 2 hours after meals)

Sugar lovers who only adjust their lifestyle to control their blood sugar can purposefully monitor the effects of food or exercise on blood sugar so that they can adjust their diet or exercise regimen [1].

2

Sugar friends who take hypoglycemic drugs

Blood glucose target: 1~2 times a week (fasting and 2 hours after meals)

Blood glucose does not meet the target: 2~4 times a week (fasting and 2 hours after meals)

Sugar friends who take hypoglycemic drugs can measure their blood sugar on an empty stomach 2~4 times a week or 2 hours after meals according to their own conditions[1].

3

Sugar friends who take insulin

(1) Basal insulin:

Blood glucose target: 2~4 times a week (fasting and 2 hours after meals)

Blood sugar does not reach the target: 3~7 times a week (fasting and 2 hours after meals)

Basal insulin is primarily used to control fasting and preprandial blood glucose, and special attention should be paid to monitoring fasting blood glucose and adjusting the dose of bedtime insulin according to fasting blood glucose [1]. If you take insulin before dinner, it is recommended to check your blood sugar before bedtime.

(2) Premixed insulin:

Blood glucose target: 3~4 times a week (fasting, before dinner, 2 hours after meals)

Blood glucose not targeted: more than 3 times a day (fasting, before dinner, 2 hours after meals)

Sugar lovers who take premixed insulin should pay attention to monitoring fasting and pre-dinner blood glucose, adjust the pre-dinner insulin dose according to the fasting blood glucose, and adjust the pre-breakfast insulin dose according to the pre-dinner blood glucose [1].

(3) Basal-prandial insulin:

Blood glucose target: 1~2 times a day (before and after meals)

Blood glucose does not meet the target: 4~7 times a day (before and 2 hours after meals)

Sugar friends on intensive insulin therapy (multiple insulin injections or insulin pumps) [2]:

  • Treatment initial stage: blood glucose is measured 5~7 times a day, covering fasting, before and after meals, and before bedtime;
  • After the treatment goal is reached: blood glucose is measured 2~4 times a day, mainly covering fasting, bedtime blood glucose, and postprandial blood sugar if necessary.

These conditions require additional blood glucose measurement: before and after strenuous exercise, when there are symptoms of hypoglycemia or when there is a risk of hypoglycemia, unexplained fasting hyperglycemia or nocturnal hypoglycemia (plus blood glucose at 2~3 o'clock at night).

In addition, sugar friends should go to the hospital every 3~6 months to test glycosylated hemoglobin, which can assess your blood sugar control level in the last 2~3 months.
