There are many new products and trends that can be seen at every Sea Otter Show. One of the small trends this year is the development of a dedicated large chicken leg for the SRAM Transmission rear derailleur in the aftermarket, which is very niche but can be a good choice for a refined lifestyle.
All three brands came up with similar design philosophies: increased durability and impact resistance, a stronger construction for clearer shifting, and larger guide wheels for better shifting performance.
Cascade
Cascade is a product that just appeared this year, and after several months of iterations, they finally launched their product at the Sea Otter Show. The rear derailleur is milled from a single blank with some stiffeners and cut-outs to maintain rigidity along the length while removing as much material as possible to reduce weight.
Cascade warrants any problems caused by manufacturing defects and premature bearing wear, and can supply any individual minor spare parts.
Pricing hasn't been fully decided yet, but it should be in the $300 range.
Kogel
The Kogel large chicken thigh is likewise milled from solid aluminum alloy and has a more traditional profile and double-sided construction. The fixed position is in the bearing center of the guide wheel, and hollow and stiffeners are also used to reinforce the box to reduce weight.
The bearings in the guide pulleys are grade 3 ABEC 5 ceramic bearings.
Kogel large chicken thighs cost $475 and come with a two-year unconditional warranty.
Ceramicspeed OSPW
As the most expensive of the above products, Ceramicspeed tries to integrate the most functions into a simple project. The Ceramicspeed large chicken leg is equipped with a so-called active debris remover, which both protects the bearing and actively cleans its installation while the guide wheel is rotating. The surface of the guide wheel is a solid aluminum disc to prevent any type of branches or debris from damaging the rear derailleur and affecting the ride.
At $669, it's definitely a luxury, but at least it looks great. It also comes with a lifetime warranty. The carbon fiber construction is indeed stiff and more durable than bendable aluminum alloy.
