The past of educated youth: My days in the Great Northern Wilderness

author:Kusane Chasha

A year after coming to the Great Northern Wilderness, one day there was a meeting of the whole company, and I wanted to attend, but suddenly the second platoon commander told me that I could not participate, this was a meeting of poor and middle peasants. I was also informed that I could not be in the propaganda team anymore. At that time, I was very angry, why did I do this to me, and what was even more angry was that Zhang Peizhen and Huo Ping, who were still my good friends, did not tell me in advance, so that I was not mentally prepared at all, and they were still good friends. Immediately, I ignored them. I don't think they can stand the test and are not worthy of being my friends.

Zhang Peizhen, Huo Ping

I think the rebels in Beijing's father's unit must have sent black materials to our corps and stepped up the persecution of our children. Anyway, it's the lowest level, and I didn't hope much for anything. The days passed like flowing water.

In March 1969, the Zhenbao Island incident broke out suddenly, and each company selected a logistics support team to support Zhenbao Island, and Wang Lin, Wang Weidong and others from our company were also selected, and they all went to the headquarters of the 21st Regiment to assemble. All of them are red seedlings. The formation of an armed company of the 21st Regiment was also on the agenda, and it seemed logical that our company would be elected. I thought: I don't know if we can become armed fighters even if we are the children of gangsters, a big question mark rises in my heart.

On this day, I was lazily playing basketball on the basketball court to relieve the stress in my heart. Suddenly, I saw a military jeep coming, and two leading figures stepped out of the car and asked me where the company headquarters was. After that, it was rumored that the commander of the 21st regiment came and brought a staff officer. It seems that the prelude to the formation of an armed company has really begun.

The next day, I came to the basketball court alone to play basketball, and suddenly the head of the 21st regiment came to me and asked me if I agreed with him to play basketball with me. I said that it was from Beijing, and my father was a leader of the Seventh Machinery Department, and he suddenly said that the official was so big, and I realized my mistake and immediately said that he was the number one leader of the Second Academy of the Seventh Machinery Department, and now he is being criticized and imprisoned. Recently, I was not even allowed to participate in a meeting of the poor and middle peasants here, and I was expelled from the propaganda team. When the bell rang for dinner, and when we were about to part, he said, "What are you going to do tomorrow?" I said, "In order to grab the seeds, transfer me to the seeds tomorrow." The regimental commander said, "Tomorrow I will go with you to sow seeds." I said, "Aren't you afraid that the sowing is very dirty?" ”

The next day I had breakfast and was ready. We came to the edge of the field, where the seeder was waiting for a long time, and when the regimental commander arrived, we added the seeds into the seeding trough, and then stood on the seeding machine with the regimental commander. Tractors dragged seeders across the vast fields, kicking up puffs of dust. I closed my eyes, covered my neck and face with a scarf, and pulled my hands quickly so that the seeds could leak out evenly. The regimental commander turned to me from time to time to say something, and the sound of a huge tractor prevented us from talking.

After the work, looking at the dusty face of the regiment leader, I felt that the regiment commander was really good, like the old Eighth Road, going deep into the masses, going deep into the front line of production, and understanding the sowing situation.

Next, the regiment commander, staff officers, and company leaders held a one-day meeting and made a very important decision, as if our company was going to become an armed company.

Before the company's meeting the next day, the regiment commander called me and Meng Guangming of the general rear to the company headquarters and said that since our father's problem had not yet been resolved, we could not become armed soldiers, and tears immediately welled up from the eyes of Meng Guangming and me, and the regiment commander was at a loss for what to do, and hurriedly comforted us.

What I didn't expect was that the first thing the head of the regiment said was to treat Meng Guangming and me correctly, saying that we are good children who can be educated, and we should not be discriminated against, that the poor and middle peasants can participate in the conference, and that the propaganda team cannot expel us.

Subsequently, he changed his words and said that in the deep area of the edge of the 21st Regiment in our company, when it rains, the roads are muddy and the mobility is not good, and once a situation occurs, it will not be able to pull out, so it has been decided not to form an armed company in our company. As soon as I heard this, I felt that the head of the regiment was really good, he took care of me and Meng Guangming in disguise. It not only did not let us be wronged, but also took into account the mission of forming an armed company. Even the leaders and the personnel of the whole company, who had already sharpened their fists and were bound to win, poured cold water from the beginning. I'm secretly happy and don't say anything.

The regimental commander and staff officers left, and I waved my hand to say goodbye to them, and forever remembered such a kind regimental commander. Later, I knew that the regiment commander was the regiment commander of the hero Liu Yingjun, because I didn't have a correct understanding of Liu Yingjun, and I kept treating him as a naughty mischievous person until Liu Yingjun became a hero. So he was demoted to our 21st regiment, no wonder the regiment commander went deep into the grassroots, he had a lesson. I deeply remember everything about the gentleness and kindness of the head of the regiment.

Xu Ying from our house told me one day that in the few days they were in the company, the staff officer was always with her, and on the night when I was on duty, the staff officer came to knock on the door of our house, but she didn't dare to open it. After the staff officer returned from our company, he heard that this staff officer had been punished by the corps and had been sentenced or shot, and was disseminated to all the corps for education.

It turned out that he was a person who used his power to rape and seduce female intellectual young people everywhere, so he was accused and punished heavily. At that time, there were more cases of rape and seduction of female intellectual youths by the Inner Mongolia Corps. There are also a large number of soldiers of the Corps who escaped from the Inner Mongolia Corps and returned to Beijing, and some of them became soldiers and were brought back by the troops of the Inner Mongolia Corps. I thought to myself that I chose back then, but fortunately I didn't choose to go to the Inner Mongolia Corps, such an impersonal place, the discipline is so chaotic, and it is not rectified.

When we heard that there was a reservoir for the four rice growing teams, Xu Ying and I borrowed two bicycles, brought kerosene stoves, cooking utensils, swimming clothes, a simple fishing hook, luncheon meat, canned fruits and other food sent from Beijing. Came to the reservoir to see, it was really not small, touched the water, did not dare to go into the water, fished for a long time, did not bite the hook, had to cook, after eating I felt that it was not interesting, that is, I couldn't swim, I couldn't catch fish, I rode back to the company unhappy.

At that time, on Sundays, we would take the company to the regiment headquarters to buy food at the regimental headquarters store, and by the way to the headquarters of the third battalion to visit the educated youth in the same class of Yuying Middle School in the third team, sometimes we didn't catch up with Ute, so we needed to walk back to the company by ourselves (there had to be 30 miles), I remember that once I walked back, the sun set the horizon, and I walked alone, a little scared, because there were wolves in this area, and the children of Guo Wenlong's instructor had encountered them, fortunately, the old comrades in the company came and had no accidents, so I looked back while walking, for fear that the wolves would follow。 In this way, I didn't really encounter a wolf several times, and returned to Lianli safely.

The past of educated youth: My days in the Great Northern Wilderness

Guo Wenlong, the instructor of the eighth team of the Great Northern Wilderness, and his three children

Because I had a salary of 32 yuan a month after I arrived in the Great Northern Wilderness, I wrote a letter to tell my mother, but at this time, the third sister and the fifth sister went to a poor place in Shanxi to cut the queue by themselves, and they couldn't eat. After my mother received my letter, she wrote to tell them to go to the Beidahuang Construction Corps, so the third sister came to the 25th Regiment of the 3rd Division (later became the 6th Division) Qixing Farm Brick Factory, and the fifth sister went to the 1st Division of the Bei'an Construction Corps, and I was the 31st Company of the 3rd Battalion of the 21st Regiment of the 3rd Division. My mother was afraid that I would be hungry and not nutritious, so she often sent me condensed milk and other food.

In 1969, my sister returned to Beijing and didn't plan to go back to the Great Northern Wilderness, so she asked me to go to Qixing Farm in Jixian County to get back the fur coat my mother bought for her and let me keep it. And specifically instructed me to tell her company commander that she would not come back.

So I asked Lianli for leave, but I didn't know that I was afraid, so I went on the road alone. When I came to the Xiaoqingshan regiment headquarters, I stayed in the guest house, and prepared to catch the first bus in the morning. At 7 o'clock, I came to the bus station in advance, and I didn't come to the bus until I waited left and right, and there was no second person waiting for the bus, so I thought there must be a change, so I hurriedly ran back to the guest house and asked the people around me what was going on, and they all said that it snowed heavily last night and the bus was suspended.

I was anxious all of a sudden, afraid that I would not be able to come back on time if I took a leave of absence. When I was hesitating what to do, I saw a small car parked not far away, and I didn't know where I got the courage, so I stupidly walked over and waited for the owner to come back. Two people walked to the side of the creaking snow, I said that the bus was out of service, I wanted to take their car, asked them where to go, but they were anxious to ask me where to go, I went to the place in detail, the person behind waved his hand and said by the way, get on the bus. The driver was a little unhappy, saying that he had a task and didn't want to have an accident, and it didn't seem to be particularly on the way.

Because I knew that I was an intellectual youth in Beijing, another person who seemed like a leader said that it was okay, and it was probably a staff officer. I also asked them a few times where they were going, but they just didn't say anything, it seemed that there was really some confidential task to do, and then I stopped asking. The car broke down once, and the driver was busy for a while and finally got on the road again.

In the evening, we arrived in Jiamusi City, and the staff officer said, "We will stay in the Corps Guest House today, put our things away, and after eating, they will call me out and go all over Jiamusi." I said how can I finish it, and the staff officer said that it can be done in half an hour, it turns out to be such a small city, it seems that they often come here. We walked and chatted at the same time, it was really half an hour from the east to the west of Jiamusi, the wide snow road, no one, the whole city went to sleep, only the three of us walked slowly.

Before returning to the room, the staff officer told me that we were going to break up, and they would go to pick up Comrade Sun Yuguo early tomorrow morning, and they would not go the same way. It seems that this car is also Zeng Siyu's (chief of staff, deputy commander and chief of staff of the Shenyang Military Region). I also thanked them for helping me in my difficult time. They told me to take a ride there to Jixian County, so I went to sleep.

The next day, I went to the bus station opposite the guest house, bought a ticket and went to Jixian County. I found the distribution center for the sale of public grain and saw the Corps trucks on the road, the local carriages were piled up, and I hurriedly asked who was passing by the Seven Star Farm Brick Factory, and asked all the way, and finally a person said that he was passing by, and I got into his car, and galloped in the snow, not afraid at all, fortunately he was not a bad person. On the side of the road near the brick factory, I got out of the car and thanked him for helping me.

Looking at the brickyard from afar, rows of low houses huddled together in a dark pile contrasted sharply with the surrounding snow. When I got closer, I saw that many of them were red brick houses, which were much better than the conditions of our company. Casually pushed open a door and asked, "Where is Wang Changyu?" A female intellectual, nicknamed "Toad", brought me to her, Wang Changyu, who had two small pigtails and a pair of deep glasses with a circle and a slightly larger face. She was very happy to see me, saying that my third sister had told her that I was coming and had been waiting for me, but she didn't expect me to come so soon.

When I came to their dormitory, she began to help me pack up my sister's things, and I didn't ask for anything else, I left it all to them, I only took the fur coat that my mother bought and some small books and washbasins for my third sister. After sleeping for one night and discussing how to go back, "Toad" felt that it was safer to take the train back, and I agreed with her, because in case there was no bus I couldn't go back, and it was impossible to meet good people.

I left the company early the next morning, and when I looked back at the brickyard, a black figure stood on the side of the road in the company and looked at me. I think the company commander must be good to my third sister. When I came to the highway, "Toad" and I stopped a Corps truck that was delivering public grain to Jixian County, and she told me to send me to Jixian County safely, and I waved my hand and said goodbye to "Toad".

I drove all the way, and for some reason I got to a place, and the driver asked me to get down, saying that he was going in another direction and asked me to wait for other trucks here. There was no one around, and I was really nervous, so I stopped several cars and didn't go to Jixian County. Finally, I stopped one, and the cab was already full, and I said that it was okay in the trailer, and it couldn't be delayed any longer, and it was getting dark. Once I got permission, I climbed in. The whirring wind blew when the car drove up, not to mention how cold it was, but fortunately there was a fur coat that my mother bought, I quickly put it on, because it was a cotton monkey style, so I had a one-piece hat, and it was not cold to tighten the belt.

On the way, the driver was afraid that I would freeze to death, so he stopped to look at me, and he was relieved to know that I had a fur coat. The place I was going to have changed so that I could take the train, and now I forget where it was. Now I checked the map, and it is estimated that it is still Jixian County.

Came to the ticket hall, there were many people in it, lined up to buy tickets, I was waiting for the train to arrive in the waiting hall, at this time I saw a young man come to me, he asked me where to go, I said to go to Yingchun Station, he said that he went to Dongfanghong Station and I in the same direction, all in the direction of Hulin.

I said it was a little difficult, and he immediately said I'll help you get some. I was a little wary, so I handed him the worthless basin and its contents, and followed him closely.

The train arrived at the station, because it was not the starting station, it stopped for a few minutes, there were many people to get on, and the car was very full. They were all crowded at the door, and the young man didn't want me to go up at all, so I pushed him up with all my might. When I entered the carriage, I found that there were not many people inside. He also found a seat for me to sit down. Soon the person next to me got out of the car, and he also sat across from me. After that, I actually passed through Jiamusi Station and went around in a big circle.

I'm also vigilant when I sleep at night, always staring at my stuff. The train slowly swayed forward, passing by Mishan, and we chatted casually, only to learn that he was a worker at the Dongfang Red Forest Farm. In fact, when he was sleeping at night, he deliberately touched my feet with his feet, which was a bit of a teasing for me, and I ignored him. Because he always wanted bad intentions at night, he had been sleeping during the day, and when he arrived at Dongfanghong Station, he hadn't woken up yet, so I kicked him up and told him that he had arrived at the station. He hurriedly took something to say goodbye to me, and said that I would go to Dongfang Red Forest Farm to find him in the future. I won't do that!

After he left, an older couple came, and I told them about the bad guys. They knew that I was only 19 years old, and they didn't think they could be careless, so when they got off the train, they entrusted me to someone they thought were reliable.

I got off the train, came to the highway, intercepted the corps truck going to the regimental headquarters of Xiaoqingshan, and finally could go home. The driver looked at me several times and began to ask questions, and I answered them all one by one, especially emphasizing that there are many children in the family and life is difficult. Saying this finally dispelled his desire to develop a relationship with him, and my person was safer and less troublesome.

This trip has trained me and increased my knowledge of self-protection, and I think that I am fortunate that my mother let me go to tandem during the Cultural Revolution and get exercised. Otherwise, if I dared to go so far by myself and stop cars everywhere, I made progress again, and my heart was full of joy.

However, from this time on, I planned to go back to Beijing, because I saw that the third sister had gone back, and I had all the exercises I should have received, and I grew up on my own, and after two and a half years, I also felt that the cultural life of the company in this wilderness was too monotonous, although I entrusted the company commander to spend 108 yuan (at that time, our salary was 32 yuan a month) to buy back a very large, high-tech semiconductor, which could listen to a lot of music, even the music of the Voice of America. But it still fulfills my father's statement, the literary and artistic life here is too poor. So I wrote to my mother one by one, saying that I was bored here, and I especially wanted to leave here, was there a way for me to go back?

At this time, I also heard that many people in the corps began to sneak back, and some froze to death in the freight wagon. Wang Weidong of our team also ran back to Beijing after returning from Zhenbao Island. In the Battle of Zhenbao Island, the logistics support team of our 21st Regiment braved death to transport ammunition and food under the rain of bullets and ammunition under the blockade of the Soviet army in the Battle of Zhenbao Island, and won the battle. For this reason, the logistics support team of the 21st regiment made a second-class meritorious service and brought a big red flower. It seems that the children of cadres and the intellectuals of various localities have also performed very well on the battlefield.

It wasn't until the end of September 1970 that my mother gave me good news, saying that my father had no problem after being examined, and that he was ready to come back to work and that you could come back. On the way back, he went to Deng Cong, director of the Political Department of the Shenyang Military Region, to handle the transfer order (because the Corps was under the control of the Shenyang Military Region).

I went to the instructor and told him about the situation, and he said that he needed to have a meeting to discuss it and see if he could approve it. The next day, the instructor told me that he agreed to let me go back, and that he had behaved very well in the company for several years, and that I should not have come in the first place, and they understood me. Because it's almost October 1, you need a border pass to enter Beijing. Instructor Guo said that he went to the Youth League headquarters to handle it for me in person and helped me buy a train ticket. I am especially grateful to Instructor Guo Wenlong, who was so open-minded and reasonable in that era, which surpassed the level of many people in that era.

After getting the train ticket and border pass, I began to pack my luggage, I removed the quilt, quilt noodles, mattress and mattress surface, prepared to take it back, and gave all the cotton to my neighbor Lao Gou (Gou Yuming), a Sichuan native (at that time, I lived in the back room of Lao Gou's house with Gong Panzhen, a young woman from Shanghai, and as soon as his family made something delicious, he brought us a particularly large bowl, which was full every time. So I thanked him very much, and I also gave him all the other miscellaneous things like buckets, thermoses, etc.

When I got in the Ute car and put my dad's war-years horse coat full of things. I glanced back at the Eighth Company, the instructors, the company commander, Lao Gou, and many people from the company came to see me off, and after a while, I saw that "Sally" was also coming, and she chased the Ute car for a while, and screamed, as if she understood that I would never come back. I waved my hand to say goodbye to her, and I really wanted to bring her back to Beijing.

I am very excited to leave the Great Northern Wilderness, both as a memorial and as a joy to leave, and a new life awaits me...... (The source of this article is the old intellectual youth home, thank you for Mr. He's recommendation!)
