This is the second episode of our special series on trade in services in the UK, focusing on a hot topic in Chinese cities today – urban regeneration.
In the 21st century, China has experienced the largest urbanization process in human history, with the urbanization rate increasing from 36% in 2001 to 66% in 2023. The main theme of this is "demolition" and "construction" – demolishing old houses and building new ones and infrastructure.
But now, things have changed, urban renewal has become the new narrative, to put it more bluntly, and people are increasingly aware of the importance of retrofitting rather than building new. Especially in the first and second tier cities, the land resources required for large-scale new projects are becoming less and less, and cities are becoming more aware of the value of historic buildings.
In this episode, we will focus on a very subdivided area of urban renewal: the transformation of old factories. These old factories may have been located in the suburbs when they were built, but as the city expands, it may already be in the core of the city where land is at a premium, and how to regain its commercial value while retaining its historical value has become a problem for more and more cities.
In this regard, the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, the United Kingdom, may be one of the most experienced countries in the world, after a long period of practice, it has stepped on the "pits" of the transformation of old factories, and formed a large number of professional service organizations in subdivided fields. And these institutions are already playing a role in China's urban renewal.
