Ms. Xu, a fifth-grade science teacher at Jianqiao Primary School, said: "This semester's science class is just learning about boats, and we also hope that the children can apply the knowledge in the classroom to real life, so they were given a topic of 'being a boat that can take the principal', and the students participated independently in small groups. ”
At the end of March, when they started learning about boats, the students first began to try to make models of boats in class and conduct simulation experiments.
Teacher Xu said: "We asked the principal in advance that the weight was about 140 kilograms, and in order to leave enough margin and error, it was calculated as 150 kilograms. We will make the model through trial and error to ensure that it can carry a weight of 150g, and then enlarge it in equal proportions according to the length, width and height. ”

Seeing the arrival of the principal, the students rushed up and began to sell their boats, some students said: "Principal, our boat is the largest and most stable, you can sit at ease!" Some students started to sell from the materials: "Ours are all used to collect plastic bottles, which is very environmentally friendly, you must try!" Another student intimately asked the principal: "What should I do if my clothes are wet?" The principal waved his hand and replied: "It's okay, I brought a spare!"
Principal Xu looked around, chose two ships that he thought were more mature, and began to officially launch.
The first time I tried it was the "Wahaha Ship", because the hull was built with Wahaha mineral water. "Come on, come on!" With the encouragement of the students in unison, Principal Xu bravely took the first step and stepped on the mineral water bottle with both feet. In order to maintain his balance, he had to half-squat on the surface of the boat, paddle the water with the oars made by his classmates, and turned around in the small pond of the school, and successfully landed on the shore.
The second test ship was the "Young Pioneer", which had wooden sides on both sides of the ship, and the bottom was spliced with bottled mineral water, which was obviously more stable than the previous one.
"It's great, it's great! Both boats are very good!" Principal Xu praised the students after they landed smoothly.
"Two weeks ago, a student came to me and said they wanted me to try their boat," he said. They carefully explained that before the production, the team members squatted at the recycling station and collected hundreds of empty bottles. They were tied to the bottom of the boat in rows with cable ties, and then the keel was made out of wooden strips, and the two were combined and fixed with screws, and a small boat that could carry the principal was born.
"The process of making a model ship is challenging and fun. Although we have learned theoretical knowledge and made model boats in science class, there are always unexpected problems in the actual production process, such as material selection, structural stability, decorative color matching, etc., which require us to find solutions or learn from the experience of others to improve. This process has trained our ability to think independently and solve problems in the face of difficulties, and I have also learned how to communicate effectively, respect others' opinions, and play to the strengths of the team. I think that in the future scientific studies, we will continue to think about this shipbuilding trip and encourage ourselves to learn and think like scientists. ”
