China was the first country to discover and use lacquer, and the vermilion lacquer wooden bowls unearthed from the Hemudu cultural site show that our ancestors began to use natural lacquer at least 8,000 years ago. More than 2,000 years ago, there was already the first peak of lacquer culture in the history of Chinese culture - the Warring and Han dynasties, such as the well-known Ming and Qing lacquerware, exquisite lacquer furniture, red lacquerware, etc., which represent the heyday of the development of ancient Chinese lacquer art.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, lacquer painting flourished. As Mr. Shen Fuwen, a famous lacquer painter in Fuzhou, said: "In the early days of liberation, he began to use lacquer to paint the portraits of revolutionary leaders and famous literary heroes, which continued to appear as single lacquer paintings, and participated in various art exhibitions." In 1962, Shanxi lacquer carvings "Ode to the Yellow River" and "Ode to Pingxingguan" were selected for the 3rd National Art Exhibition; in 1984, the 6th National Art Exhibition, lacquer paintings were presented at the National Art Museum of China as an independent painting, entering the palace of art; in 1986, the National Art Museum of China held the first Chinese lacquer painting exhibition...... During this period, many people of insight also emerged, and even devoted their lives to the cause of modern Chinese lacquer painting.

Among them, Mr. Qiao Shiguang (1937-2022), as a pioneer of modern Chinese lacquer painting, has made outstanding contributions to the cause of Chinese lacquer painting with his lifelong efforts in the long years. In 1962, Qiao Shiguang, a graduate student at the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts, came to Fuzhou Arts and Crafts School to study lacquer production, which formed an indissoluble bond with lacquer art. Since then, Mr. Qiao Shiguang has studied lacquer painting and its expression methods, and has integrated traditional production techniques and modern ideas to create a new look of modern and contemporary Chinese lacquer painting art. For decades, Mr. Qiao Shiguang has made unremitting efforts to explore the artistic expression of lacquer language, and has promoted and constructed the establishment and development of lacquer art discipline in the Chinese arts and crafts education system.
Before his death, Mr. Qiao Shiguang served as a professor at the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts (now the Academy of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University), a director of the Chinese Artists Association, and the president of the China Lacquer Painting Research Association. His classic lacquer paintings such as "Fish and Rice Town", "Songkran Festival", "Jiangnan Water Town", "Taihu Plum", "Qinghai-Tibet Plateau", "Believer" and "Impression of Ganzi Temple" have had a profound impact on the creation and development of Chinese lacquer painting.

For a long time, lacquer painting has become an art category with Chinese characteristics with its unique materials and production techniques. After harvesting and drying, the natural lacquer is decorated, polished, and polished, and has a charm that is different from other media. Therefore, lacquer painting has a distinct and independent aesthetic character. Lacquer painting often takes a long time and involves a complicated process, and it is rare for an artist to be able to create several works a year, which makes lacquer painting extremely precious.
