Overseas Chinese experienced the evacuation from Haiti: the road was difficult, but heartwarming

Since February 29, Haitian gangs have attacked police stations, airports, prisons and other public facilities in the capital, Port-au-Prince, and the state of emergency in the western province where the capital Port-au-Prince is located has been extended until May 3.

After clashes erupted in Port-au-Prince, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs activated the consular protection emergency mechanism, facilitating the safe evacuation of more than 50 Chinese personnel from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, to neighboring Dominica on March 22 and April 11.

A few days ago, Wang Fuxing, who returned to China, told Xiaoqiao about his experience.

Suddenly there were gunshots

In early March, Haitian gang forces raided the National Penitentiary and Croix-de-Bouquet prisons in Port-au-Prince, resulting in several prison guards killed and wounded and thousands of prisoners escaped.

Wang Fuxing's project is not far from the prison, and on the night of the prisoner's escape, a shootout broke out without warning at the project site, and Wang Fuxing and his colleagues stayed in the basement until 2 o'clock in the middle of the night. Early the next morning, the company helped them evacuate to a relatively safe place.

"At the moment, the company has a lot of security forces to guard the project, but we are not sure if we can see it. If circumstances permit, I would also like to return to Haiti and complete the project. Wang Fuxing said.

A long history of turmoil

When Wang Fuxing arrived in Haiti in 2016, he was still able to drive out on his own to buy daily necessities. In the past two years, the situation in Haiti has been turbulent and the law and order situation has deteriorated, so he has to minimize going out and rely on local drivers to buy daily necessities. For the past month, he has been almost closed.

It is reported that Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world. On July 7, 2021, the assassination of Haiti's then-President Jauvenel Moïse left a power vacuum, and gangs became more and more organized in terms of confrontation with the government, weakening state institutions, and controlling the population, resulting in a high incidence of violent crime in Haiti and a deep crisis of politics, security, development and humanity.

Warmth in the midst of hardship

On April 11, Wang Fuxing arrived in a helicopter to the border city of Haiti and Dominica, and arrived in Himani, Dominica, through the port. He then took a five-hour drive by coach to his accommodation in Dominica. After a few days of stay, he took a flight on the 14th, arriving in Shanghai, China, two days later.

"Although it was only a little more than 20 minutes on the helicopter, behind it was the continuous coordination of forces from all sides. Wang Fuxing introduced that before the evacuation, the company took into account factors such as age and language, grouped everyone, and arranged a team leader for each group.

"On the bus on the way, the staff brought small bread and water. At the temporary accommodation, the Dominican Chinese Association put up a welcome banner. The Chinese Commercial Representative Office in Haiti, the Chinese Embassy in Dominica and the Chinese community in Dominica have provided us with a lot of help, and they have protected our safety at all costs. Wang Fuxing said that the road was difficult, and there were many heart-warming stories.

"It feels so good to go back to China, the whole person is completely relaxed, I don't have to worry about my phone being robbed, I don't have to worry about getting hurt, and I can go out freely. Wang Fuxing said.
