In November 2016, Sun Yangzhou suffered from frequent physical discomfort and was later diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and subsequently underwent tumor resection surgery. After less than 3 months of recuperation after the operation, Sun Yangzhou returned to work.

In March 2021, Sun Yangzhou, then political commissar of the Jieyang Municipal Public Security Bureau's Environmental Food and Drug Investigation Detachment, found that there were problematic steel products in Jieyang at work, reported the situation as soon as possible, and simultaneously organized research and judgment, and controlled more than 30 people involved in the case that night. In order to avoid the risk of debris flow, the higher authorities decided to urgently organize the transfer of tourists to Anjiazhuang Village, Mentougou District, Beijing.
