Wu Changshuo (1844-1927) was a native of Wu Village, Xiaofeng County, Zhejiang Province (now Anji County, Huzhou City). Formerly known as Jun, also known as Junqing, the word Changshuo. During the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, he was a famous Chinese painter, calligrapher, seal carver, representative of the "Houhai School", the first president of the Hangzhou Xiling Seal Society, and Ren Bonian, Pu Hua, and Xugu were collectively known as the "Four Masters of the Shanghai School in the Late Qing Dynasty". It integrates "poetry, calligraphy, painting and sealing", and melts gold and stone calligraphy and painting as a furnace, and is known as "the first person in stone drum seal calligraphy" and "the last peak of literati painting".
Wu Changshuo began to paint after middle age, and his painting subjects were mainly flowers, but also occasionally landscapes. In the early stage, he was instructed by Ren Yi, and then he used Zhao Zhiqian's painting method, and learned from Xu Wei, Bada Shanren, Shi Tao and Yangzhou Eight Strange Families, and used seals, subordinates, and wild grass brushstrokes into the painting. The color is bold, unique, mixed with color but not dirty, bright but not vulgar, and has a simple beauty. The work is heavy on the whole, still imposing, advocating "unrestrained place does not deviate from the law, subtle place to take care of spirit", rich in gold and stone. Wu Changshuo wrote Meilan with a seal pen, and the wild grass made grapes. The flowers, wood and stone, the pen is old and spicy, the momentum is strong, the layout is novel, the composition is also close to the chapter of the book seal cloth white, like to take the "of" word and "female" word pattern, or make a diagonal oblique potential. The color is similar to Zhao Zhiqian, and he likes to use strong contrasting colors, especially the use of Western red, and the color is bright.
