What we see on the bright side is the high-end intelligent driving assistance system, which has brought Huawei into the market of less than 250,000 yuan. In this market at the same price, the M5 with lidar + high-end intelligent driving function should be the only one, and it has also enjoyed the dividends of a wave of full-stack self-developed intelligent driving solutions (Huawei).

Ideal at the same price, only one set of high-speed NOA can be used, but if it is at the level of 279,800, then the intelligent driving function of the two cars is the same, both have high-speed + urban NOA functions.

The new M5 still uses ternary lithium batteries, but it is replaced with a larger 42kWh battery pack, theoretically speaking, the increase in battery capacity will bring greater pure electric and comprehensive cruising range, which can achieve a longer cruising range than the old model (an upgrade idea in line with iterative logic). However, the new M5 did not develop according to this logic.

So, why increase this 2kWh battery capacity?

It can be understood that the power consumption of this system is 0.2kWh after 1 hour of operation, and 1kWh of power will be consumed after 5 hours of operation. It is precisely because the configuration of intelligent driving requires power consumption, if the battery capacity is not increased, then on the basis of keeping the original 40kWh battery pack unchanged, its final range will not be as simple as only 5km (pure electric) and 15km (comprehensive) less than the old model, and the loss of cruising range may be greater.

What else can be done other than increasing the battery capacity?

The most cost-effective solution is to limit the maximum output power of the motor, which is simpler and more cost-effective than increasing the battery capacity, but Wenjie did not adopt this solution. In fact, the kind of thinking like the ideal L6 is the right way of thinking. After cutting the power by 30kW and reducing the weight by 130kg, the energy consumption is reduced by about 10% compared to the ideal L7. On the other hand, the ideal L6 product at the same price, the front and rear dual motors are all four-wheel drive standard, with a maximum power of 300kW, and the power is limited to the ideal L6 power gap is getting bigger and bigger (itself Wenjie M5 is missing a motor, suffering), so this scheme is not adopted.

In fact, this is also a more helpless choice, of course, the new M5 must have also thought about optimizing the efficiency of the motor, the problem of weight reduction, may be out of cost considerations, and finally gave up this idea; So on the whole, the most effective solution is the stack battery capacity, but in the end, it still does not level the same pure electric/comprehensive endurance as the old model.
