Recently, I had the pleasure of listening to the teachings of Mr. Tang Fazhou, a descendant of Qi Baishi, the president of Qi Baishi Painting and Calligraphy Academy, and a disciple of Qi Liangzhi, especially his research experience on Qi Baishi's Xianzhang. According to Tang Fazhou, when appreciating Qi Baishi's works, attention to his seal is crucial. These seemingly small chapters are actually the key to interpreting the artist's inner world, and they are also an important basis for evaluating the authenticity of the work.

"Idle chapters are not idle", this is a sentence that Tang Fazhou used to describe the characteristics of Qi Baishi's seal. Qi Baishi has made countless seals in his life, and he has devoted his heart and soul to showing his life perceptions, artistic concepts and even humor. From the rough and rustic in the early days to the perfection of the late years, each seal is a microcosm of the evolution of his life and artistic style.

If we want to deeply understand Qi Baishi's artistic realm, we cannot ignore his attitude towards seal carving: "I love Wu Ding" is his respect for traditional classics, and "Wooden Man Stone Heart" reveals the personality charm of indifference to fame and fortune. However, as Tang Fazhou pointed out, with the passage of time and social changes, authentic Qi Baishi seals have become increasingly scarce, and imitations have flooded the market, bringing great challenges to the identification work. Therefore, mastering a certain amount of professional knowledge and meticulous observation is the key to distinguishing authenticity. We must learn to see the beauty of the lines of the seal and the ingenuity behind it, so that we can see the sun and recognize the true seal.

In addition, we should also be aware that although the development of technology has facilitated counterfeiting, it is the spirit of the work of art that cannot be replicated. Just like the old man Qi Baishi once said: "The beauty of painting lies in the difference between the similar and the unlike." On this basis, we can conclude that whether we appreciate or collect Qi Baishi's works, we should feel the life force hidden between the brushstrokes with a reverent attitude.
