Cao Yongjun: A Chinese Teacher's Science Reading Story - From "Unreadable", Unreadable to Promoter

Scientific reading is the basic reading form and essential reading literacy of modern citizens. For the majority of primary and secondary school students, the importance of scientific reading is undoubted. However, who should take responsibility for scientific reading in school? Is it a teacher of mathematics, physics and chemistry? Mathematics, physics and chemistry classes are about doing research and experiments, and reading is not the mainstream form of learning. Are they teachers of labor classes and information courses? These two courses are mainly aimed at cultivating students' labor skills and the ability to make small inventions and small manufacturing, and they are not closely related to reading. Although a Chinese teacher is responsible for guiding students to read, it is also difficult due to the limitations of their own knowledge reserve and knowledge structure.

Instead of waiting for the conditions to be ripe, we should take action and start with our own scientific reading. Five or six years ago, I consciously took a systematic make-up course and read dozens of books, including popular science, science fiction, and scientific classics. Some of these books talk about the Big Bang, some about the Great Extinction, some about the Great Voyage, and some about imagining the Great Astronautics······ Let me appreciate the beauty of the magnificent and thrilling scientific reading, and experience the joy of cross-border reading.

Science reading has opened me up to new worlds. In the face of the uncertain reality and future, my heart has also become stronger. I want to pass on my reading experience to students and peers, ignite their fire of curiosity, and become a modern person with a scientific background with them. So, I joined the ranks of promoting scientific reading.

In the process of scientific reading, I have met many excellent experts, through whom I understand the frontiers of the subject, obtain academic support, and have the confidence and confidence to promote scientific reading.

In the professional discussion of participating in the popular science fiction community, I felt the scientific quality, scientific spirit and scientific thinking that the members of the community generally have, and gained a new understanding of scientific reading. What is the essence of scientific reading? It's not as simple as I used to think. The accumulation of scientific reading is an overall understanding of human diversity, an overall picture of human culture, and a better understanding of the world.

How to make scientific reading take root in primary and secondary schools? Scientific reading depends on the construction of a scientific reading curriculum with goals, contents, steps, and evaluations.

Since 2018, my team and I have gradually developed and constructed the school's science reading curriculum through study and exploration and practice, including the "Five Ones" science fiction education course: a student science fiction club to form a team, a school-based elective course, the team to open an elective course on "Reading and Writing Science Fiction Works" to train a group of backbones, and a science fiction essay contest to organize students to participate in the "National Science Fiction Essay Contest for Middle School Students" organized by the China Science Writers Association We have compiled and printed a science fiction magazine, the campus science fiction magazine "Chaowen Dao", published students' science fiction works, and summarized the achievements of science fiction education in the past year. In this way, starting from the science fiction club and elective courses in the fall semester, to the heating up of the science fiction essay contest at the end of the year, to the climax of the science fiction night reading salon in the spring semester, and the release of the campus science fiction magazine in early summer, year after year, the cycle is repeated, in line with the rhythm of campus life, so that science fiction education can take root on the campus of ordinary high schools.

Our curriculum is modular, replicable and can be rolled out to other schools. In recent years, I have worked as a reading curriculum guidance expert in many primary and junior high schools in Nanjing, helping them to build reading courses. Around the Spring Festival in 2023, with the popularity of the "Three-Body Problem" TV series, I cooperated with the tutors of the "Houhu Literature Club" of the Primary School Affiliated to Nanjing Xuanwu Foreign Chinese School to develop the "Three-Body Problem" reading course. Teachers read the works and design reading lists, so that students and parents can watch TV dramas together, read "The Three-Body Problem" together, and then go to the original site of the Purple Mountain Observatory to carry out scientific reading and sharing of "The Three-Body Problem" under the mottled star map, using various forms such as reading, situational performances, dialogue speeches, and questions to exchange reading experiences, with the help of the unique form of science fiction to let their imagination fly, plant a seed, and cultivate students' spiritual quality and bearing to step on the earth and look up at the starry sky.

I am a high school Chinese teacher with more than 40 years of teaching experience, and I know the weaknesses and pain points of Chinese teachers in scientific reading: as a lover and guardian of literary classics, I usually talk about literary classics, but when it comes to scientific classics, I am at a loss.

I take my own reading as the research object, the reading of my like-minded friends as a sample, and the exploration of scientific reading with my students as a method, write papers, publish treatises, set up popular science fiction lectures and observation classes, write popular science book reviews, and shoot recommended videos of popular science books······ The content of these promotional activities is different, but there is a distinct theme, that is, in the face of the surging development of science and technology, based on the present, how should teachers meet the challenge of science reading, and how to carry out popular science fiction reading guidance.

As long as the method is appropriate, teachers of all subjects can lead students to scientific reading through hard work. The key is for teachers to change their reading orientation, get the pleasure of scientific reading, and then find their own scientific reading strategies to empower school science education.

In fact, like many teachers, I have resisted scientific reading, first, because I "can't look at it", and second, I am afraid of scientific reading, and I am afraid that I will not be able to read it. The experience of scientific reading has taught me that scientific reading is not something that can be learned without learning and will come naturally. Scientific reading ability is a kind of special ability that builds on the foundation and is higher than ordinary reading. It has its own rules and methods, and this requires long-term training. Who will train us? At present, we can only rely on ourselves to complete self-transformation and iteration in the process of promoting scientific reading.

Take myself as an example, and tell me how I overcame difficulties to go from not being able to read to being able to understand. As a Chinese teacher, I chose to directly read the original texts of principle, general and ideological books in the field of science, and after I had a certain foundation, I gradually read science as a story and as a history. The key is to change one's attitude towards scientific reading, read it, read it, and appreciate the different beauty of scientific reading.

I am a veteran Chinese teacher and a new recruit of scientific reading, I have received guidance and help from many experts, and I will continue to walk on the road of promoting scientific reading in the future, and enter the vast world of scientific reading with more students.
