Carefully cultivated

On April 22, the reporter learned from the Management and Protection Bureau of Yunnan Yaoshan National Nature Reserve that the bureau carried out the first seedling collection and breeding of the second generation of Qiaojia five-needle pine in the breeding population, and successfully cultivated more than 1,000 live seedlings recently. "In 2023, we carried out the cultivation of the second-generation seedlings of Qiaojia five-needle pine for the first time, and they are currently growing well. Hu Yanping, director of the scientific research institute of the bureau, said that it takes a lot of time and energy to collect and dry the seeds of Qiaojia five-needle pine. After the seed cones are picked, they need to be dried for nearly two months, and the seeds can only be screened out by constant shaking. At the same time, soil selection is also very important, it is necessary to choose loose and breathable weathered soil, and disinfect with "carbendazim". Qiaojia five-needle pine, also known as five-needle whitebark pine, is a rare tree species found in the early 90s of the 20th century only distributed in Qiaojia County, Zhaotong City, Yunnan Province, China, is a very small population of wild plants, and was assessed as a critically endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, there are only 35 existing wild plants, distributed in Yangjiawan area of Yunnan Yaoshan National Nature Reserve and Fushan Village, Zhongzhai Township. In order to expand the population of P. qiaojia and reduce its extinction risk and endangerment, the Management and Conservation Bureau of Yaoshan National Nature Reserve in Yunnan Province has successively carried out a series of work such as seedling collection, near-situ transplantation, and ex-situ transplantation, so as to expand the planting area and population distribution range of P. qiaojia, increase the population number, improve the stress resistance of the species, and maintain the continuation of the population of P. qiaojia. Statistics in 2023 show that 2,677 surviving plants were transplanted in the wild in Qiaojia County, and 980 surviving plants were transplanted outside Qiaojia County.
